KEY TO MY HEART

Disclaimer: J.K. Rowling owns everything you recognize from Harry Potter. Veronica Donalds belongs to me. Craig David is not mine (shucks.) nor is his song 'Key To My Heart'.

Being a first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was hard for all the eleven year olds. For muggle borns, however, is was especially tough.

Veronica Donalds, a small brunette with shocking teal eyes, was as clever a witch as any at Hogwarts. Her intelligence was matched only by her wit, for she was constantly making sarcastic remarks. Yet her company was still valued and enjoyed by the other Gryffindor first years.

Veronica had barely turned eleven when she received her acceptance letter from Hogwarts, via owl post of course. She had been quite surprised when she obtained the letter, as you could expect, but she recovered quickly and was most enthusiastic about being magical.

That brings us to the present Autumn day. There was a definite chill in the air and the sky looked overcast, as if it were going to rain at any moment. Veronica should have been down in the common room, parked by the fire, maybe enjoying a game of wizard chess with her friends. But instead she was sitting in her cold, lonely dormitory, thinking of a special someone. A certain fourth year boy who Veronica was utterly smitten with, but who she doubted even know she was alive.

Just thinking of Him, which was what she referred to the object of her affection as, made Veronica get an uneasy butterfly like feeling in the pit of her stomach.

To clear her mind, and abdomen, she flipped on her compact disk player, which she had insisted on bringing and which made for constant speculation from her pure blood chums. Her favorite compact disk, Born To Do It (Craig David), was currently in the player. The CD always reminded her of Him.

"Lonely hours, lonely days," sang Veronica softly to herself, She licked her lips and looked out the window, thoughts of him racing through her mind, as she continued singing along with the song.

"You see you got the key to my heart, unlock me and take all my feelings apart," crooned Veronica in a lovely voice. "When you said you had to leave, had to go away. You closed the door on me!" Her eyes were sparkling like pearls just out of the ocean's murky depths.

As the song faded, Veronica got a burst of personal strength. Why was she up here, alone in her dormitory, moping? She should be in the warm, cozy common room with all her mates. She turned off the compact disk player and sauntered out of the room.

She marched down the winding staircase towards the common room with her head held high. Veronica spotted a group of her friends seated around a table where a game of exploding snap was taking place.

Veronica plopped down on the outside of the semicircle, amid many cheerful 'Hellos', and became as absorbed in watching the game as everyone else. But not everyone was sneaking occasional glances carefully directed at the corner where He sat.

But that was because, unlike Veronica, not everyone was head over heels in love with Colin Creevey.

A/N: I know CD players and other muggle electronics could not work inside Hogwarts, I do pay attention to Hermione's speeches. But I carelessly forgot this until I was half done, so please make an exception for my story.
