Scene 1: In Castle's bedroom
Castle's eyes slowly drift open to find Kate sleeping sound next to him. He checks his watch, the watch supposedly found in a tent he'd been hiding in for two months. 6:24 am it reads. He silently rises off the bed, being careful not to wake his finace up. Stumbling to the washroom, he feels a sudden headache. The effect of dehydration doesn't seem to have worn off yet. He catches himself in the mirror and almost doesn't recognize who he was looking at. His hair is longer and his face tanned. He comes to wonder how he had gotten the bullet wound on his leg that he noticed last night. Lanie did tell him that he had contracted Dengie Fever, what could have I been doing in a tropical location? Where could have I been for the past two months? Who would abduct me? Is someone trying to stop me from marrying Kate? It saddens him to realize that he was never able to see Kate in her wedding dress. I need to understand what happened to me, he thinks with determination. He turns on the water tap to wash his face and hears out Kate's voice, "Castle?"
"I'm right here Kate" walking to her bedside.
"You're up early."
"Was going to make you coffee," he states with a warming smile. "I figured we can get a head start today, look into my disappearance."
"Yeah, I'll go get ready." She slides the duvet off of her body and rises.
"I'll go make the coffee." Castle leaned to kiss her forehead. "Good morning."
Scene 2: Castle's office
"I'm ready to go." Kate walks over to Castle's office with her bag over her shoulder only to find Castle at his desk writing. "Hey, I thought we were heading to the precinct."
"We are, I just had an inspiration to write out a scene."
"Is it for a new Storm book?"
"No, I don't think so, I actually don't know what is it, it just sort of came up."
Kate placed her bag on the floor and walked over to him. She begins to read a scene describing an older man, dragging a seemingly dead body onto a small boat. It's almost pitch black, the sun just having set. Gunshots are heard. The man shoves the boat with as much effort as possible into the open water. The boat manages to disappear into the darkness, being hit by a couple of what seem as harmless bullets.
"Castle did you imagine this?" Kate asks curiously.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean was this from a dream or an idea you had recently?"
"I'm not too sure, it just sort of happened. Why do you ask?"
"This scene, describing a boat disappearing into the darkness with an unconscious man. Castle that man is you! Are you remembering what happened to you?"
"Kate I told you I don't remember anything. The past two months are a complete blur."
"What if you do remember … but subconsciously? Could it be possible that your sudden inspiration is based on something you've recently been through?"
"Kate, I..." He pauses as she rushes to grab her phone from her bag. She dials a number quickly, puts it on speaker and waits for the line to be picked up.
"Hello, Dr. Swan, this is Detective Kate Beckett, I spoke to you a few days ago about Mr. Castle's condition."
"Yes Detective Beckett, how can I help you?"
"I was wondering, is it possible for someone with amnesia to still be able to recall some events somehow unconsciously?"
"If you mean whether I have seen any patients with retrograde amnesia express their memory implicitly through other forms of communication, yes I have. Some patients seem to dream their memories and yet wake up not realizing their dreams were a reality. Other patients appear to express their memories in art forms, like paintings or story telling. Is everything alright with Mr. Castle?" Castle and Beckett make eye contact.
"Yes, he's doing fine, thank you Dr. Swan" Kate hangs up the phone.
"I think we just found a lead!" Castle and Kate state simultaneously.
