Balto 4: Sabaka's Journey
A/N – If you know Sabaka (aka Saba) you'll probably love this story. Saba is the sister of Aleu, Kodi, and Dingo, among other unnamed pups in the litter. Saba is the main character in this story, and it will center on her. If you want more information on the plot, go back to my summary of this new story and it will tell you more about it.
Anyway, this takes place not too long after Balto 3: Wings of Change, so enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own Balto the end.
Chapter One
The summer breeze drifted through the Alaska pines as dogs ran through the snow, enjoying their afternoon run. All of them were happy. Most of them were galloping around, chasing each other. Several younger pups sat in the grass, chewing on dirt and rocks.
Fish swam through the river, and bears jumped to catch them. All was great.
Except for one little thing.
Sabaka, who went by Saba for short, sat alone, cleaning her paws as a distraction to her anguish. A single tear rolled down her furry cheek. Her lip trembled. "What's the matter, Sabaka-girl?" a softer voice asked. Saba looked up to see Silver, but who she called "Maw", since her parents were dead, walking toward her. Her grey-ish white fur mixed with a tint of silver gave her real name.
"Oh, I don't know, really." Saba studied her paws as Silver sat down next to her. "I guess I'm just thinking," she muttered. "About what, dear?" When Saba finally looked up, she saw Silver's eyes were genuinely concerned. "Well, I'm just...I'm just wondering about my heritage, is all." Her voice was quieter than usual.
"Your heritage?" Silver wrinkled up her nose. Oh dear, she thought, I've been suspecting this would come up sometime soon now. "Well, firstly," she said slowly, "your mother, Jenna, was a pure-bred husky."
"What does that make Papa?" The glare in Saba's eyes showed she wanted know the answer immediately. Silver sighed. "Well, darling, your father was half wolf," she murmured. "Half wolf?" Saba's fur bristled. "You mean, he's a wild animal?"
"Half," repeated Silver; "half, he was. Not full, may I mind you. His mother was a wolf, but his father was a husky. He knew not of us parents, however, since he was raised by a goose."
Saba laughed, but without joy. "So you're saying my father was a wolf who was raised by a goose?" Her voice was filled with scorn.
"Yes." Somehow, Silver managed to keep calm and collected. "He managed to get through all the torture he was put on, however," she added, as if in attempt to comfort the younger wolf. "Don't worry, darling," Silver said softly, nuzzling Saba when she commenced to cry. "Everything will be alright."
"What are you?" Saba asked as she pulled away, wiping her tears away swiftly with one of her paws. "That's for you to find out," said Silver, smiling gently. "Well, dear, I suppose I shall be going.." Silver turned to go. "But," she added before she left, "if you want to find out who you truly are, talk to your sister; Aleu. She will know the answer. She has known it for longer than you have, my dear wolf-girl."
Before Saba could say anything else, Silver disappeared like fog into the trees, howling her goodbye.
She disappeared, thought Saba. Just like...just like a wolf...
