'I wear long sleeves because I was in a bad accident when I was younger.'
Staring at the naked arm she had held up to investigate, Hotaru frowned heavily at the horrid scars that were imprinted on her once previously gracefully smooth baby skin as her own excuse echoed within her mind causing something to wretch within her stomach. Her emotionless lavender eyes traveled up to her delicate hand as it slowly formed into a fist, stretching the skin grafted upon her lower forearm.
A hiss escaped between her teeth as her eyes winced from the rapid sharp pain that shot out from the area above her elbow, her eyes immediately began to water, but the tears dared not venture from the brim. The skin had grown tight, she had been lacking in her physical therapy and stretching exercises – this happened once in a while during one operation or another, sadly. It would take a bit for it to expand again, she was not looking forward to the tackle the whole process, but, according to her father, these operations were necessary to return her to her once normal life.
A normal life. Hotaru's chances at a normal life disappeared long ago – the accident, all these operations and the blackouts. A failed skin graft was the least of her problems; her appearance was the least of her problems. She would gladly continue to wear long sleeves if it meant being able to play with her new friend, Chibi-Usa, or dragging her daddy away from all the hours her invested in working. Nothing good, that she could at least see, was coming out of any of this.
How could anyone physically alter themselves willingly? Had they been ill informed such as Hotaru? Promised this could only make them better? Were they told of the physical therapy they may had to endure? One thing was for certain – Hotaru knew this definitely was not the path to the happiness she envisioned.
