I'm here for you, brother

Kousuke barely dared to breathe in and out when he sneaked into the kitchen as quietly as he could possibly manage. He was terrified someone would hear him, but to his relieve all stayed silent. He didn't actually break any rules as far as he knew. Neither Ayaka-san nor Kenjirou-san ever forbid him to go into the kitchen after bedtime for a midnight glass of water. Nevertheless he rather not blemish the hospitality of his new mom and dad. Mom and dad… Even after the few months they had spent in the Tateyama-house, Kousuke's heart still fluttered by the thought of having a new mom and dad. It took a while for him to be able to actually call them 'mom' and 'dad', but now that he did, he never wanted otherwise. Compared to Tsubomi and Shuuya he had found it much easier to grow accustomed to the whole family concept, but then again, unlike Tsubomi and Shuuya he could barely remember his biological parents. Two weeks ago Kousuke finally caught Tsubomi in the act, when she asked Ayano 'where mom and dad were going', confirming that the green-haired girl also decided to open up. Shuuya was a different story. Kousuke could not remember ever hearing the boy say anything other than 'Ayaka-san' and 'Kenjirou-san', but the deceiving-like nature of the blond had always been hard to predict.

Moving forward, Kousuke entered the kitchen and a shiver ran down his spine when his feet touched the cold stone floor. Quickly he tip-toed to the table in the middle and moved one of the wooden chairs to the dresser so he could reach the cabinet hanging above by climbing up the chair. Now being fully able to open the cabinet he picked up a simple glass, climbed down again to fill the glass with water. The sound of water pouring in the sink, made him startle. As soon as the glass was filled, he shut down the water tap, afraid someone might hear the noisy clatter. Restoring the chairs and table to their original position, Kousuke picked up the glass and made his way back to the bedroom.

By the time he entered his shared-bedroom (he had to share a room with Shuuya, since the house didn't hold enough rooms for each of them) his heart was beating fast of the dread he felt. There was however no sound coming from the other bedrooms and Kousuke forced himself to calm down. Just breath, he told himself, while sneaking over to his bed. Just as he was about to slid between the sheets, a muted groan was heard in the small bedroom. Kousuke's head popped up at the sound while his eyes flickered to all sides of the room to find the source. Did someone see him leave for the kitchen? There was no moved and Kousuke relaxed slightly. Then his eyebrows frowned. If no-one came into his room, then what was the sound he heard? A second soft groan made him jump, tough this time the noise was more of a whimper. Kousuke held his breath when the realisation hit him. Softly he narrowed the space between him and Shuuya's bed. Bending over he could see the pained expression on the blond's face. His eyes were shut tightly and his lip quivered almost unnoticeable, making soundless words that Kousuke could not decipher. Judging by the look of Shuuya's troubled appearance, it was not hard for Kousuke understand what was going on. A nightmare. It wasn't the first time either. Even at the orphanage Kousuke and Shuuya had shared a room and back then Kousuke had woken up more than once because of the nightmares that plagued his best friend, his brother. He didn't exactly know what the nightmares were about, Shuuya never let him on, but he had seen bits of glimpses that spooked through Shuuya's mind upon waking up. Believe it or not, back then Kousuke had even less control over his powers, causing him to accidentally activate his eyes and see things that he was never meant to know. In those moments he felt ashamed of himself for intruding other people's minds, but sometimes it also scared him. Especially the accidents with Shuuya. Shuuya always acted cheeky and playful on the outside, but Kousuke figured long ago that most of the times this was just a facade. The glimpses of nightmares that Kousuke had seen in Shuuya's mind were nothing to be cheery about. He truly never wanted to know more about the nightmares than just those fragments, he was too scared to know the truth, but it also made him sad to watch Shuuya struggle with his past on his own. Kousuke wanted to be a better friend, a better brother. He wanted to help more…

Hesitating the brown haired boy watched the blond for a few more minutes. Than he took a deep gulp of air and carefully touched Shuuya's shoulder, shaking him lightly.

"Shuuya."

There was another groan. Or sob. At this stage, Kousuke couldn't tell the difference.

"Shuuya?"

He shook a bit harder, causing the blond to stir in his nightmare-driven sleep.

"D-don't…" sounded an almost inaudible, young and shaken voice. "I-... M-make… Make it s-stop."

The dark prevented Kousuke from noticing any clear details, but later he would swear to have seen a single tear roll down the blond's cheek. Kousuke heart ache at the broken sound of Shuuya's voice. He felt so useless right now. He stood there, seeing the other boy in pain, but he couldn't actually do anything to help him.

"Shuuya? Please, wake up," he pleaded gently. "You have to wake up."

Once again the deceiver-boy stirred in his sleep, though this time more visible. His eyelids tighten and un-tighten, as if he wasn't sure whether to open them or not.

Then it happened. Kousuke couldn't tell as to why he did it, but it felt as the right thing to do. He bend forward and closed his arms around the slightly shivering body underneath the sheets. The warmth of the body spread right through the bed sheets, tickling Kousuke with a cosy feeling. Even though he could not actually see Shuuya's face, he knew the other had opened his eyes.

"K-Kousuke?" Shuuya trembled.

"Sssh, it's okay," Kousuke whispered soothing. "I'm here for you, brother. I'm here."
