Walking With Walkers
Walking with Walkers is Howard's hobby. Or at least what comes close to a hobby in this distorted time. He tries to remember what his hobby was before the outbreak but his mind drew a blank.
What he does remember is the most important things. Howard was a man in his late twenties. He had a stunning wife who could outsmart a room full of scholars any day. With her he had a baby boy who's future looked bright. But since the outbreak, he lost them both at once and he has been alone ever since.
Thinking about his past is depressing for Howard so he took a look around at the environment. All around him are thousands of walkers. They are dead that have come back to life to feast on everything that has meat on their bones. What's worse is if you are even nipped by one, then you are doomed to become a feasting walkers yourself. The only way out is a bullet to the head.
What keeps Howard alive right now is that he is covered in the blood of a Walker himself. His Polo shirt that was once white is now permanently stained with brown, His torn through jeans make him look like a hobo and his pale face and his shaggy black hair makes him look ghastly. If you had looked at Howard from a distance then you would see nothing but monstrosities.
The motorway that the horde of Walkers is travelling on would be considered a deathtrap by anyone passing by. All around there are abandoned cars with more rust than Lady Liberty. If you look at the ground then you can see enough cracks to give constant bad luck. What's worse is that on Howards right there is a large hill. It's s perfect place for someone with a sniper rifle to perch. At least he could escape to the forest on the left. Provided he can get through the walkers quick enough.
Distracting from his thoughts, Howard heard a hiccup. Not just any kind of hiccup (though normally a hiccup alone is unusual in this situation), it's the kind of cute and pure hiccup that only a parent has experience hearing. It's the one of a baby.
"I must be delirious." Howard muttered. "I'm only travelling with Walkers and all they do groan."
Howard quickly realised his mistake and stopped talking. If the Walker hear one wrong noise then you're dead. He decided to forget he thought he heard something and move on.
After a few minutes Howard heard the hiccup again. This time around he could not ignore. He took a look and came across an unbelievable sight. Just five meters away just to his in front of him was a young girl, 11 maybe, holding a baby in her arms. Just like Howard Both of them were covered in blood and they seem to be following the horde along the motorway.
The young girl looks very peculiar. She's wearing a blue Jean that are ready to be grown out of. The jacket she's wearing is bright blue and ugly. It looks more like a shoot me sign than anything. On the girls head rests a baseball cap that's usually worn by boys. Looking at her Howard can tell she has been moving for a long time and hasn't stopped.
What's more amazing and terrifying is that she is holding a baby. If the baby were to cry then it would attract every Walker within a mile radius. It would spell doom for them if that happens. Howard wanted to reach out and take them somewhere safe but one wrong move wrong move and would be all over him. He can only hope that he could find an opportunity to escape later.
Howard took a moment to look up to discover his worst fear has been realized. Unbelievably on top of the hill is a figure holding a sniper rifle. Whats worse is the sniper rifle is aimed right at the young girl with perfect precision.
"That man aims to commit pointless murder!" Howard couldn't help but say out loud. Luckily no one heard him.
The battle of the lifetime is happening inside Howards brain. If he doesn't help save the girl then he be able to live but he would have to bear with the guilt forever. On the other hand if he does help then could get shot or eaten. When the baby cried his instincts decided for him.
Howard found himself running straight for the young girl, picking her up and running straight for the forest. He wasn't sure why he did it but he knew that it was the right thing.
"Let go of me!" The young girl tried to protest the gunshots zipping by silenced her. The baby still crying though. Despite the bullets missing the came past too close for comfort.
"At least the bullets should attract the Walkers away." Howard hoped.
They managed to get into the forest but a lucky shot got Howard right in the leg. This made him trip and drop the young girl and the baby. After a few seconds the girl standed up. brought a bottle out of her bag and started to feed the baby.
"This should keep him quiet for a while." The girl said. She made a movement to help him.
"GO! Before the walker come!" Howard urged.
"But you will die" The girl pleaded.
"I know but you must live! Let that baby live." Howard said.
The girl looked at him and said "Thank you." before running off.
Once she was out of sight Howard adjusted his position waiting for the inevitable. As he lay there, he can hear the Walkers approach. Once they reached him they proceeded to rip his flesh and consume him. Howards last thoughts are of the loving family he lost.
