I woke up to the sight of blinding white light of the halogens above my head and the dull coloured ceiling. I turned my head to the side and caught sight of heart rate monitor, beeping along with my heart. I looked down the bed towards my feet to see a pale blue blanket covering my body. I must be in some kind of hospital room but I don't remember why. I didn't remember much to be honest, the accident must have caused some sort of damage. I closed my eyes and retreated back into my mind, trying to remember something. I heard someone enter the room and walk over to my bed, their cool hand holding up my hand and running their thumb over my smooth skin. I opened my eyes with a start and looked over at them.
"Hi," they said. My eyes focused on their face and my lips curled into a smile.
"Hi," I whispered back. "What happened?"
"You were hit by a car," my best friend replied.
"How badly was I hurt?"
"Surprisingly not badly, you had a few broken ribs but they've seemed to have healed. You had me worried Alannah," Nessie said.
"I'm always fine, remember," I said, smiling at her.
"I know. Always have been. Never got a scratch from anything. Freak," she said as she walked out the room. I didn't take offense, never did. It was her way of accepting the way I am. I sat up, feeling fine and ready to take on the world but I knew I would get a stern look from the nurse when she walked in so I just sat, waiting for them to turn up and release me. When I was 4 my parents found me hanging upside down from a tree and scared me so much that I fell and broke my arm. They rushed me to the hospital to find that it had mostly healed and the doctors just dismissed it as a fracture, not a break. It took another day to heal completely. When I was 10 I sliced my hand open on a kitchen knife and my parents watched in horror as it healed in front of their eyes. It was never the same after that, they never treated me the same way. When I was 18 they bought me a house and left me to it, only ever seeing me on my birthday and Christmas. They always 'had plans' on their birthdays so in the end I just gave up and stopped seeing them completely. The only one who stuck by me was Nessie, despite my weirdness. The nurse walked in and checked me over before giving me my clothes and discharging me.
"I'm ready to go home," I said as I stood next to her. She was staring at a bunch of men in suits at the front desk. "What're you staring at?"
"Those men, they asked for you," she replied, facing me.
"I don't know who the hell they are," I said, shrugging my shoulders. "Police?"
"I doubt that. Let's go," she said as she pulled me towards the exit.
I opened my front door and threw my keys on the side. I flopped down on the sofa and let out a big sigh. If only I could remember what happened, what made me so reckless? Why would I walk out in front of a car without paying attention? I shook my head and walked into the kitchen, opened the fridge and pulled out a pot of pasta.
"It'll have to do," I said to myself and opened it up, eating it with the fork on the draining board. A knock on the door startled me and I put my food down, heading to the door and opening it. In front of me was a man dressed in a black suit.
"Alannah?" one asked. I nodded my head. "My name's Agent Coulson, may I come in?"
"Sure, what's this about?" I asked as I closed the door behind him and led him into the living room, sitting down on the sofa.
"We've been watching you for a while and we think that it is best if you come with me," he said.
"Who's we and why?"
"I work for someone that specialises in people with extraordinary abilities. We feel that it is best for you if you came with us, we could help you learn about what you can do and how to control it."
"Where do I have to go?" I asked, my heart racing. Special abilities?
"America," he replied.
"America? You expect me to go with someone I don't know and fly to America?" I said, my voice raising slightly and standing up. "Who are you?"
"I'm Agent Coulson, Alannah. You have special abilities that you don't know how to control and you need to calm down," he said, standing up and holding onto my arms. The lights above flickered as anger filled me.
"Get out of my house, I don't know you. GET OUT!" I yelled and there was a massive bang as the living room light burst, glass thrown all over the room.
"Do you understand now?" he asked, calmly as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. I nodded.
"Ok," I said. "When do we leave?"
"Tomorrow morning, I'll pick you up at 7," he said and he left. I ran over to the phone and rang Nessie. I needed to say goodbye.
"Hello?" she said.
"Ness, it's me. Please don't ask why and don't be mad but I have to leave tomorrow," I said.
"Why?"
"I have to leave for America. I don't know what's happening to me and I've found someone who can help but I can't tell you anything else. I'm sorry and thank you for being there for me, you're the best friend anyone could ask for and I know I don't deserve you," I sobbed down the phone, my hand clutching the phone hard.
"That's it, you're just going to leave?" she yelled. More tears rolled down my cheek.
"I'm sorry. Goodbye," I said and hung up. I cried whilst packing and I cried myself to sleep. How could my life get so complicated? Was I going to find out what I was capable of? I could only wait to find out.
