From the BDM.

Dr. Mathias: "She's a creature of extraordinary grace."

Simon: "Yes. She always did love to dance."

Only River can hear the music. But only River needs to hear it. She knows its all in her head but that's not important. In fact, its better that way. No one can interrupt it. She can listen to it until she gets tired and it stops all by itself.

But she's anything but tired right now. She wants to dance and she does. Normally she hates to have any kind of audience when she's in this mood. But today its different. Because today its just her and Kaylee.

Kaylee can't hear the music. She doesn't need to. She's enraptured by its results. She thinks she's never, EVER seen anything or anyone more graceful than River. The long beautiful legs that flash from under her abbreviated dress; the supple body that bends into positions Kaylee can barely imagine; the bare feet that seem to spurn the floor. All of this makes her sit quietly, holding her breath, fearful that she will disturb River and wanting this to never end.

River senses the other girl's delight. It makes her even more determined to please the woman who has become her bunkmate, her best friend and finally her lover. She moves closer to Kaylee, until she is within arms reach. She sways, leans close until Kaylee has to sit on her hands to keep from reaching out, to keep from grabbing the enchanting creature before her. She wants to, oh she wants to so much but even more she wants to watch River dance.

The other girl is almost flying now. Kaylee swears she leaves the ground and floats in the air of the compartment. It's magic. There's no other explanation for it.

The mechanic blinks her eyes. The dance has changed. She blinks again. River has shed her dress in one movement that nearly brings Kaylee to her feet.

River can tell her friend is striving to remain still and she applauds her for her strength. Its one of the things that draws her to Kaylee, that and the boundless joy the other woman takes in the 'verse. She compliments River, brings out happiness the sometime tormented girl thought was lost forever. The music knows it. That's why it had changed. It had become slow and seductive and she had responded.

Kaylee is aroused. She trembles. And she knows that River is aware of this arousal. The smile that lights the other girl's face gives it away. Kaylee loves that smile. What she doesn't even realize in the innocence that is her central core is that she is the only one who sees that smile. For she is the only one that can bring it out.

River stops and Kaylee sighs because that means the dance is over. Then River holds out her hands and the other girl realizes that the dance is just beginning. She rises and joins the girl she loves. Nimble fingers somehow dance across her body and now she is dressed just like River is. And then their bodies come together and now Kaylee can hear the music too.
