Always a thousand miles away, even at the distance of a touch. She was never just here. Her mind always wandering, always looking for signs of trouble. There was never enough caution. We couldn't. We shouldn't. And so we didn't. I stayed. I waited. Every touch a conquest. Every kiss a victory. Sex was by then rare, but breathtaking, earth shattering. The idea of leaving never crossed my mind. Not even for one second.
One day, though, one day silence took over. It was loud, heavy with words stripped out of their meanings, taken away from their places in sentences that had once brought up castles from thin air. Soon it became so thick that our lips grew numb, thirsty for hope.
There was none.
Life's roots tangled in memories of existences left to rot in a shore of deceased dreams melted into nightmares.
Darkness.
A breath.
Then a whisper.
"Leave."
