When Sonic entered the small, dark room, he saw that Shadow was facing the wall on the other side of the room, carving something into the stone. He stood there a few seconds, studying Shadow closely, and smiling slightly, he quietly tip-toed across the room. As he approached the dark hedgehog, he lifted his hand and ran a finger down his side. Shadow shivered noticeably and closed his eyes.
Sonic wrapped his arms around Shadow's torso and put his chin on his friend's shoulder.
"Hello," he whispered.
Shadow didn't respond, but instead just stood quietly, leaning back into Sonic.
Sonic felt his stomach fill with butterflies and turned his head so he can whisper into Shadow's ear, "I love you Shadow."
Shadow stiffened, hesitating for a moment, then turned around in Sonic's arms and looked into his eyes.
Sonic blushed, whenever Shadow looked at him like this, he felt as if Shadow was looking right into his soul. It also made him a little uncomfortable because Shadow looked as if were torn. His face said that there was war raging in his mind that he couldn't quite win.
After a few minutes, Sonic became worried. Why isn't he saying anything? he thought frantically. Panic surged through his veins and he knew that there was no way to hide it from Shadow. It was too late, he would know that Sonic was vulnerable when it came to him. If he things went back to how they were... If their rivalry resurfaced... Sonic wouldn't stand a chance against him. He cares too much for Shadow to put his heart and mind into fighting him again.
Another moment passed before Shadow smiled, happy to see that he meant something to good ol' blue. "I love you, too, Sonic."
Sonic's worry was quickly replaced with joy. He felt his stomach lurch at the words and he looked down at his feet, shuffling them a bit. "Shadow, I just wanted to ask..." he started, but he couldn't finish. Shadow had wrapped his arms around Sonin and pressed his lips hard against his. It only took a moment for the blue hedgehog to relax against Shadow.
When they finally pulled apart, Sonic said, "I love you, shadow," very quietly, color filling his cheeks.
Shadow smirked, "You said that already."
The younger hedgehog looked into Shadow's eyes, "I really mean it," he said.
Shadow nodded and pulled his friend closer to him. "I know," he said into Sonic's ear.
Sonic closed his eyes for a second relaxing once more into Shadow's arms. Taking a deep breath, he nodded and opened his eyes.
On the wall behind Shadow a heart was carved into the stone. Inside the heart it said, "Shadow and Sonic."
Sonic smiled widely and closed his eyes again. "Good."
