Mirror Mirror

"Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most powerful of them all?"

The mirror did not hesitate to reply.

"You, my yōkai king Sesshōmaru."

A year passed, wars waged and won, and once more the yōkai king stood proudly before his mirror.

"Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most triumphant of them all?"

The mirror dared not hesitate to answer.

"Yōkai king Sesshōmaru, the ruler of Heaven, Hell, and Earth."

A with a smirk, the yōkai clad in white disappeared onto the bloody battlefield once more.

"Mirror mirror on the wall, which demon stands above them all?"

The mirror could not fathom an answer that did not praise his master.

"Milord Sesshōmaru, standing on his pedestal of bones."

Sesshōmaru smirked and was off once more, the sharpness of his blade cutting through the night.

"Mirror mirror on the wall, who has no weakness?"

The mirror would smirk if it could.

"No one, milord."

The mirror could tell that the yōkai king who used him to gorge his ego was seething.

"You lie mirror."

Oh how great it was just to be a mirror and not that of flesh and blood.

"But I do not, no one is without weakness."

A question lingered in the air but the yōkai king dared not speak it, fear of falling ingrained in him.

"Mirror mirror on the wall, what is my weakness?"

Years had passed and the egotistical lord had used the mirror less and less, but the question remained.

"A woman named Rin, a human orphan turned to the blade, quenching her bloodlust as you do."

The yōkai king disappeared, off to find the blood hungry human woman who was his weakness.

"Mirror mirror on the wall, have I the right woman?"

The mirror saw the women bound in chains that Sesshōmaru had brought.

"No milord, she isn't right."

The mirror didn't know what his lord did with girl but he saw the pails of blood in the morn.

"Mirror mirror on the wall, is this the girl?"

She was a pretty little hime, an dagger in hand, but the mirror knew deception when he saw it.

"No yōkai king, this girl is not it."

So Sesshōmaru dragged the girl away and the mirror saw smoke rising into the air.

"Mirror mirror, what foolish quest did you send me on?"

The days had passed, turning to centuries, and swords had long been banned.

"The foolish quest you wished to embark on.

And so Sesshōmaru found himself searching for the past in the era of guns and humans.

"Mirror mirror on the wall, have I made the right choice?"

And the mirror would smile if he could, a smile of happiness and humor over irony.

"Yes, your wife was meant for you, the strongest of the strong."

The mirror had seen the yōkai king grow, along with the world evolving from bloodshed and poverty to wealth and glory for all. He had seen the ego, the desperation, and finally the love the bloomed inside the yōkai king Sesshōmaru. His human weakness, the Rin, had finally come in the modern era, a woman who had been born in poverty and thrown to the streets. A small knife she'd held at his lords throat when they had first met, a robbery of the wealthy and blue bloods. Somehow along the way, Sesshōmaru had forgotten that she was what his weakness was, instead letting her cultivate what he'd hidden; his heart. And the day that they'd sipped saké and pledged eternity to one another, his lord, who'd once been strong physically but weak everywhere else, became the strongest of the strong, with the weakness Rin making him even stronger than the gods themselves.

"Mirror mirror on the wall, boy or girl?"

Yes, Rin had changed his lord much.

"Rin shall have a son."

Sesshōmaru this time didn't return to war but to his wife to share with her the news, a happy ever after.
