Our Quest By: Celebrindal

A/N: This is a pretty old poem. . . extremely old. It may not even be a poem. But since my sister badgered me until just now, it's going up. If you don't like it. . . I'm sorry, but if you liked it, please review me and tell me.

I knew you'd try to come

And I had to prevent it

I can't let you come

Even though you holler at me to come back,

I can't put you in this much danger

For this is my Quest

And my Quest alone.

I hear a SPLASH behind me

And I turn to see you, dear Sam

Wading, though you don't know how to swim,

To catch my boat.

"Go back Sam! I'm going to Mordor alone," I say,

But you take no heed

"Of course you are! And I'm coming with you!"

Foolish Hobbit!

I don't listen to your ranting and raving

I am determined

Because this is my Quest

And mine alone

But when I look behind

To see you one last time

You disappear beneath the azure waves

Of the Anduin

Shock ripples through me

Sadness and pain

"SAM!" I holler, but no change comes over the surface

I paddle my boat

To where I last saw you,

And plunge my arm into the water, searching for you

And miraculously, my hand finds your arm, limp and lifeless

Yours doesn't

Now truly

This is my Quest

And mine alone

But what have I done?

Have I doomed you to a watery death?

With your last thought, "He didn't take me"

But then, I feel your fingers clasp my wrist

Never has anything been so happy for me

And I'm overjoyed as I pull you from the river

And into my boat

You splutter and cough and gasp for air

Then gaining your breath, you say

"I made a promise, Mr. Frodo, a promise!

"' Don't you lose 'im, Samwise Gamgee'

and I don't mean to. . . I don't mean to."

Touched by your determination, I pull you into a hug

"Oh Sam," I say, embracing you

And we cry in happiness on each other's shoulders

And when we part, I am dripping wet

But I don't care

I hand you an oar

And you grin in relief

We start paddling

And as we do

You break the silence and say

"Besides, this was a Quest made for friends"

I only smile as I think

Not my Quest

Not for me alone
