Disclaimer: I don't own Stargate. Bother. Oh well.
I've been wanting to use this song in a story for a while. Here goes! Hope you like it. The song is "Up on the Roof" as sung by James Taylor. Kind of cute.

Jack O'Neill turned from his telescope to pour a cup of hot chocolate from the thermos sitting next to his chair.
I'll climb way up to the top of the stairs and all my cares just drift right into space.
He held the cup to his lips and blew across the top, sending steam rolling upward. Nothing like a good cup of hot chocolate. Of course the below freezing weather made it twice as appealing.
He turned his head and looked once more at the narrow view of the stars. Beautiful. A sight that always gave him a feeling of peace. All that vast open space. It made him feel less confined here on earth. Maybe that's why he liked flying so much.
"Sir? Sorry if I'm bothering you. When you didn't answer your door, I figured you might be up here. General Hammond needs you to sign these papers."
Jack sighed and turned around.
"Carter, do you have any idea what time it is?"
"Umm, let's see, 11:55."
"That's right. And do you know what day it is?"
"December 31?"
"Very good. Now come over here," he gave a small grin and a shake of his head as he waved her over. Did she ever stop working?
Sam climbed the last step and walked over to where the Colonel was sitting, taking the warm thermos mug he held out to her. Jack unfolded another chair and set it beside his, took the folder from her hand and tossed it a few feet away. Unfurling a blanket, he spread it over their legs.
On the roof it's peaceful as can be And there the world below don't bother me. On the roof that's the only place I know Where you just have to wish to make it so.
"Just give me one second . . . There, got it," Jack said as he checked his watch. He picked up his thermos and touched it to Sam's mug.
"Happy New Year, Sam."
Sam grinned. "Happy New Year, Sir."
They drank in the New Year then took turns looking at fireworks through the telescope.
At night the starts they put on a show for free And darling you can share it all with me. Right smack dab in the middle of town I found a paradise that's troubleproof. And if this old world starts getting you down There's room enough for two Up on the roof.
"Thanks, Sir."
"Anytime, Carter, anytime."
General Hammond would just have to wait.

Happy New Year everyone. Celebrate safely! Please review! I'm hoping to start a new chapter story sometime this week.
