"Have you decided on the names?" said Anne.

"Yes," Gilbert said. "Anne and Diana."

Anne said nothing.

"What?" said Gilbert after a moment of silence.

"Nothing," said Anne. "I did say you could choose the names. But did you put any thought into it at all?"

"Of course I did," said Gilbert.

"Well I was hoping you'd pick Diana of course. But Anne?"

"Don't you like your own name?"

"Well enough," said Anne. "But it's not what I would have chosen. And just as you say, it's my own name! It will get confusing with two Annes, and I tell you right away I will not let you call her Annie." Gilbert had a relation who called Anne 'Annie' in a cloying way. As a result she detested it.

"Of course not," said Gilbert. "We'll call her Nan."

"I suppose that solves that," said Anne. But Gilbert sensed she still did not seem convinced.

"What name could possibly go better with Diana?" asked Gilbert. Anne opened her mouth but before she could say anything Gilbert continued, "Trust me, I have tried a few pairings and I know, Anne goes with Diana best."

"You only say that because you are so used to it," said Anne.

"You are right," Gilbert said. "I am used to the pairing of Anne and Diana. When I hear those two names together, I see two smiling, happy, joyous girls having great adventures in the fields they are wandering through. And I hope to see another pair of girls do the same."

Anne smiled. "When you put it forth in that manner how can I be dissatisfied? Let it be Anne and Diana."
