During The Night

Lily knew she shouldn't go out in the dark.
Lily knew it was against the rules.
Lily knew that it wasn't safe to go near the forest.
Lily knew of the dangers she would face.

It was night time. The dorms were shut and the students were sleeping. Sirius was snoring softly, his legs flung over the side of his bed and his arms hugging his pillow close to him.

James sighed. His friend looked like such a baby when he slept. He wished that he found it as easy to sleep, but he didn't. He couldn't sleep at all at the moment.

It was Lily's fault. She was so pretty, so kind, so perfect. She was always on his mind. She made him feel so guilty and so wrong. She never put a toe out of line. She would never fall for him because she didn't approve of him or the things he did.

He pulled the Marauder's Map out of his trunk, glad that he was the one in charge of it. He tapped it with his wand, whispering "I solemnly swear I am up to no good," as he did so.

He scanned it for the usual out of bed suspects. A few students, his friends, the teachers. No one. The school was pretty much empty. That was surprising seeing as there was usually at least a teacher around.

And then, at the very edge of the map, he noticed a tiny figure. Its label read 'Lily Evans'.

He squinted closer. His eyes really weren't playing tricks on him. It was definitely Lily, and she was up in the middle of the night. By the forest no less.

"Wow," he breathed, realising that Lily couldn't be as good as he thought she had been. Perhaps there was a chance for him after all. He couldn't wait any longer; he needed to see her. And anyway, she could get hurt around there. He couldn't let her have an adventure on her own.

He climbed quietly and quickly out of bed and pulled his cloak on over his pyjamas. He glanced over at Sirius but luckily his friend was still fast asleep. It was time to go.

Using the map, he navigated the school easily and reached the entrance without incident. He ran across the grass, his feet and pyjamas soaking from the dew. He could see her by the forest.

"Lily," he whispered, hoping he wouldn't scare her. "Lily, what are you doing?"

"Potter," she replied, turning around. "I thought you'd turn up."

She smiled, and James smiled in return.

"You knew I'd be here?" he asked.

"Of course," she said. "You can never resist a bit of danger."

Then she kissed him.

James reeled back, confused.

"What have you done with Lily Evans?" he asked jokingly.

"She got bored," said Lily, grinning.

James had never been so happy.
