This is what happens when you read HoND fic and listen to your German Highlights of Les Mis at the same time.
Disclaimer-Victor Hugo, author of both the epic Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables is dead ('ding-dong the merry-o! sing it high, sing it low! Let them know that Victor Hugo's dead!' I still don't know why I like that song so much…Nessa's my favorite character...I'm digressing again…) However, I have this fear that both Frollo and Javert will some day show up at my house at night with machetes if I keep saying that, so this belongs to Hugo ('You two happy now?!') Aaaaannnnd, the pop-showtune in this fic belongs Monsieurs Boubil et Schonberg.
This is my first HoND fic…and my first non-Les Mis fic, yet I still found a way to sneek it in! MAHAHAHAHA!
*cough* Alright, on with the fic!
Oh and a note: I don't support Emseralda/Phoebus. Nor do I support Marius/Eponine, this song just works well for Esme's situation.
The towers were cold as the wind blew through them. Esmeralda shivered in the wind. She looked down at her feet. He drew her arms around her body, pretending she was in the arms of Phoebus, her Sun God.
On my own,
Pretending he's beside me
All alone,
I walk with him till morning
She closed her eyes, and in spite of her hopelessness, and she imagined he was there to protect her.
Without him,
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way
I close my eyes,
And he has found me,
Esmeralda smiled to herself. She felt safe her very own form of Sanctuary, her world of Phoebus. Everything was brighter when he was in her mind. She did not feel lost or unwanted, she just felt loved.
In the rain,
The pavement shines like silver
All the lights
Are misty in the river
The darkness of the towers was gone. Even the darkness of her skin did not seem to matter anymore. His fair skin and golden locks seemed to make her olive skin and ebony tresses acceptable.
In the darkness,
The trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me
Forever and forever!
And I know,
It's only in my mind,
That I'm talking to myself
And not to him
Tears began to slowly run down Esmeralda's face. He is never coming to get me. He has forgotten. She thought to herself. He's moved on. I'm just holding myself…
And all though,
I know that he is blind
Still I say,
There's away for us.
Esmeralda looked up a bit. Her jaw quivered a bit. No, no, maybe, he might still love me. Maybe he still cares…She wiped her tears. She looked out at Paris. It was early morning.
I love him,
But when the night is over,
He is gone,
The river's just a river,
Her hope quickly faded. She became bitter toward Phoebus. This was the first time she had ever felt anything aside from love and admiration for him.
Without him,
The world around me changes
The trees are bare,
And everywhere the streets are
Full of strangers!
I love him,
But everyday I'm learning,
All my life,
I've only been pretending!
Esmeralda could not face it. She could face it that he was alive, and he did not care to save her, to find her. To love her.
Without me,
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness,
That I have never known!
Esmeralda fell back to the ground. She would just interfere with his happy life with his happy fiancée. He had never known the sadness she had always known, why should she bring it to him?
Very soon, his world would go on turning without her.
I love him,
I love him,
I love him,
But only on my own…
The End
AN: Fleur is in no way comparable to Cosette, even though they are in the same position in this song...Cosette is just awesome. Fleur is not.
I really need to learn how to write longer fics...
Okay, my many rants are now done. Hope you enjoyed and please review!
