Walking

"Hey guys it's so nice outside, how about we all go for a walk?" Nick suggested.

The kids cheered, that sounded like a wonderful idea.

Nick and Jackie got the kids' shoes on and then Jackie got out Dolly's and Skittles' leashes while Nick set up the double stroller for the babies.

"Dada can I walk Skittles?" Johnna asked.

"No kiddo, you can walk Dolly, but I don't know how Skittles does on a leash and I don't want her to make you fall."

Nick guessed that Skittles had never been trained how to walk on a leash, her previous owner was elderly and didn't get out much.

Nick had trained Dolly how to walk on a leash when she was a puppy and she had picked it up quick, she was a smart dog.

"Skittles is nice, she not make me fall." Johnna protested, thinking Nick was crazy.

"I know she's nice but she might accidently make you fall." Nick insisted.

She frowned but took Dolly's leash when Nick handed it to her.

When they got on the walking trail Nick found out that he was right, Skittles was terrible on a leash, for as small as she was she was nearly walking Nick.

When the family stopped to have a drink of water Dolly sat down next to Johnna's side like she was supposed to but Skittles nearly yanked Nick's arm off, she'd never been on a walk before and apparently she didn't want to take a water break.

"Sit Skittles." Nick told her.

Instead she barked at him.

"No that would be speak." He mumbled.

The kids laughed at her antics, even the babies giggled at the little dog from their stroller.

Jackie couldn't help herself, she chuckled too, but she was laughing at the kids' reactions, not at Skittles.

"Sit." He told the dog again.

This time she crouched down on her haunches facing Nick as if she wanted him to chase her.

She was loving this, her tail was going a million miles an hour.

"Lay down." Nick tried.

Dolly laid down which made the kids laugh harder.

"Good girl Dolly." Nick mumbled before he turned his attention back to Skittles.

"I was speaking to you. You might not know how to walk on a leash but I know you know what lay down and sit mean, I taught you that and you do it all the time."

In response Skittles barked at him again.

"Hundley what are you doing?" Jackie asked as she looked over and saw the little girl attempting to climb on Dolly's back as if she was a horse instead of a Dalmatian.

Dolly just lifted her head and frantically wagged her tail.

"Seeeee." Hundley squealed.

"No, she's not a horsey, you'll hurt her." Jackie told her as she grabbed her off the very patient dog.

Jackie gave Dolly an apologetic pat on her head and then the family continued on her walk.

Skittles still acted like it was her mission to rip Nick's arm from it's socket, buy the time the family got back to the house Nick's arm felt like it very well might fall off and it was obvious to him that he'd have to spend a lot of time with Skittles on a leash to teach her, it might be a while, a long while before any of the kids could walk her.

The End!
