The Christmas Shoes

It was Christmas Eve, and guess what? There I was. Caught in a line at Wal-Mart. I should've listened to Yug' and not waited till the last minute to buy presents. Awww Well. They get them one way or another.

My eyes fell on a small boy in front of me, his hair brown with a blonde touch... or was that dirt? His clothes was tattered and torn, his shoes looked worse than mine... that's saying something! My eyes darted to his dirt-caked fingers, and in them was a beautiful pair of red shoes.

He soon reached the front of the line, where I could never believe what that little boy said next.

"Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my momma please. It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size. Could you hurry, sir? Daddy says there's not much time. You see, she's been sick for quite a while and I know these shoes will make her smile and I want her to look beautiful if momma meets Jesus tonight.."

The cashier and the boy counted an odd assortment of pennies, nickels, dimes, and a few tattered bills. Then, after what felt like forever, the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here."

The boy's icy blue eyes filled with salt-water tears as he turned to look at me. "Momma made Christmas good at our house, though most years she just did without. Tell me, sir, what am I gonna do? Somehow I gotta buy her these Christmas shoes..."

I gave the poor little boy a warm smile. I set aside the present I had been saving for myself and dug out a twenty. "Here you go," I told the cashier.

I'll never forget the look on the face of that boy when he smiled and said, "Momma's gonna look so great!"

I knew I caught a glimpse of heaven's tender love as he thanked me and ran out, God had sent that little boy to remind me what Christmas is all about.

I paid for my stuff and pushed the buggy outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of the boy, but I couldn't see him. I started to leave, a voice stopped me.

"Wheeler?"

I spun around to see Kaiba.

"What is it, rich-boy?"

Kaiba gave a slight smile, and said in a familiar voice that made me think of that boy, "Merry Christmas." He reached out a hand for me to shake. When I shook it and pulled back, a twenty dollar bill was in my hand. I stared at it for a few moments, when I looked back up to tell Kaiba I didn't need it, he was gone. But a few steps in front of me was that little boy with what looked like a two-year old raven-haired boy at his side.

I want her to look beautiful if momma meets Jesus tonight…
