It was bitterly cold outside, but I stayed where I was, kept warm by the knowledge I'd see her. Soon. I hadn't seen Lily for several years, until we had suddenly met again, quite literally bumping in to each other in Flourish and Blotts. She was with Potter, but he had gone to Quality Quidditch Supplies, whilst Lily searched for a book she hadn't already read. We got talking, exchanged addresses and made plans to meet soon. I left before Potter came back, wanting to avoid a confrontation.
Lily and I met a week later, and talked for hours. After that, we met every week, always in Diagon Alley, never at our houses. However, one week, she arrived late and her beautiful green eyes had been filled with tears. Apparently Potter and Black had gone off to god knows where (not even Lily knew) for some training thing, and he'd be gone for months. You could say it was indecent of me to comfort an upset girl in that way, but we found ourselves back in Spinners End, where it had all started, kissing and pulling apart each other's clothing. And so our relationship changed again, morphing from friendship to something more. Much more.
There she is- coming round the corner, hunched over to keep out the cold. As she got closer, her face broke into a smile, and I stepped forward to hug her. 'Sev, it's so good to see you.' Her voice sounded a little rough, from a cold or something, but it was also filled with delight. 'Come on, let's walk, it's too cold to stand around.'
We had walked several streets in an easy silence before she spoke again.
'Sev, I don't think we can do this anymore.' I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My Lily- was breaking up with me? 'James will be back soon, and I just can't lie to his face, Sev, he trusts me!' I shook my head, trying to clear it, and think of something civil to say. She sighed and stepped in front of me, so she could look me straight in the face 'Sev- I- I'm pregnant. That's why I came here, one last time, to tell you-' She lowered her head.
I felt the blood drain from my face. 'What...' James had been away 3, 4 months, it could work out, but it wasn't likely. 'It's mine. Isn't it.'
Lily raised her tear stained face, the green eyes meeting the black.
'I don't know. I just don't know.'
'It's mine; it's got to be mine! Just tell James that childhood sweethearts don't usually last this long and you've had a good run, but-'
'Says you!' She burst out. 'You've loved me since Spinner's End, since the beginning! You have no right! Yes, I knew, how could I not, there were rumours everywhere at Hogwarts, how could I not know?'
I turned away from her, not quite able to meet those blazing green eyes once more.
'I-' I sighed 'It's true.' No point in lying now is there? 'I have, and will always love you.' Now it was her turn to turn away. 'Please, Lily…'
'The thing is, Sev, is that, well James and I- we're engaged.' She had always had the ability to strike me dumb, but tonight, she was really taking the piss.
'What?'
'We're engaged. That's the reasons- one of the reasons- I can't lie to him. He'll see straight through me.'
I gaped at her, backing away. I couldn't, wouldn't believe this. There were tears filling those beautiful emerald eyes. I couldn't take it anymore. I ran. Ran from love, to the oh-so welcoming arms of Lord Voldemort.
Months later, at the end of July, a boy was born to Lily Potter, a boy with her eyes and black hair. Whose black hair- I still don't know.
