I know, I shouldn't be updating a new fic when I have that one to update (I'm so sorry), but what can I say, inspiration hits when inspiration hits.

"This isn't about what I said the other day, is it?"

But it was. It was about everything that Sam had said the other day, and everything else Sam had ever spoken that was even remotely close to what was said the other day. Of course it mattered. The words Sam had spoken to Dean had hit him like a wall of bricks, and completely tore Dean apart on the inside, even if his outside said I'm fine with that.

But Dean was most certainly not fine with that.

Sam was his brother; everything Dean did, he did with the pure intention of his brother, of keeping him safe. It had been almost thirty years when Dean made that promise to his father to keep his little brother safe, and while Dean may not have always done the best job that it, he always did his best.

Dean was terrified to lose his brother though; Sam was the only good, pure thing left in Dean's pathetic life. Dean knew that Sam was angry with him for everything that went down with Gadreel, but for Sam to make Dean choose between being a brother or staying with the younger man was downright cruel.

Dean loved Sam with all his broken heart, and there was nothing that Sam could do that would ever change that. They were brothers, and being brothers meant being angry, having fights, and staying away from each other for awhile, but no matter what, they were supposed to be there for each other. Dean knew that yes, maybe he had gone too far by tricking Sam into saying yes to Gadreel, but it honestly terrified Dean to be alone without his little brother by his side.

Dean's very definition of himself was to be Sam's big brother, the super hero Sam could depend on no matter what. Had there been screw ups along the way, of course, but that was only because Dean was human who would make mistakes.

The fact of the matter was that Dean did everything for Sam, no matter the cost, no matter the consequences. That was the way the two brother's had rolled, or at least that's what Dean had thought.

"This isn't about what I said the other day, is it?"

"...oh, about the 'we're not supposed to be brothers'? No, don't flatter yourself, I don't break that easily."

But as Dean turned away, he knew in his shattered heart that what he had said, had been a lie.

So I totally binge watched Supernatural today, and this came into mind when I was watching Season 9, episode 13 "The Purge" (*tears*). I hoped you liked it, please leave a comment and let me know what you thought!
