Disclaimer: The song is mine. I wrote it for this fanfic. Not that you will, but if you want to use it, ask. Nothing else is mine.

A/N: Well, TriStateCopFan, consider this my review: I liked your story, but it's a bit angsty for me. So forgive me if this one's pretty damn cheerful. Anyhow... anyone who missed the episode and wants a rundown of the shippy parts, email me (or drop it in a review). On a different note... do you think actors read fanfiction? And if so, how obsessed do we sound? Heh, just a random thought.

You Are

He didn't seem surprised that she'd shown up at his door at two in the morning, any more than she seemed surprised to see him still awake and dressed in the same clothes that he's worn all day. She curled up on one end of the couch, and he sat on the other, feet stretched out on the coffee table in front of him. She was the first to break the silence.

"Bobby, I'm really sorry that I put you on the spot in court today. I really should have told you about my request for a transfer."

He smiled a little. "Like I said before: I know I'm an acquired taste. I'm just glad you stuck around to acquire it." He was still staring at the wall across the room, as was she. "Besides, I'm sure you had your reasons."

"I was afraid, after I'd withdrawn it, that telling you would have convinced you that I was going to leave. You wouldn't have trusted me to stay, after that."

THERE'S ONLY JUST THE ONE PERSON THAT

I TRUST WITH MY LIFE AND THAT'S YOU

THERE'S ONLY JUST THE ONE PERSON THAT

I'LL ALWAYS TURN TO, THAT'S YOU

She risked a quick glance at him, but his face hadn't changed.

"You're right. I probably would have seen it as a sign of abandonment, if only attempted. I would have tried to push you away before you could hurt me." They continued in silence for a few minutes, until he spoke again. "The fact that you knew me well enough to know that I'd take it that way... that means a lot."

NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER CARED ENOUGH

TO LOOK AS DEEPLY AS YOU

NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER CARED ENOUGH

TO BATTLE MY DEMONS LIKE YOU

"It looks like I'm not the only one with a good understanding of human behavior."

"Not human behavior," she corrected him. "Your behavior. After I wrote that letter, I started to notice you watching me, like you wanted me to stay but couldn't bring yourself to expect it. You were willing to meet me if not half way, at least part of the way, if I would try. Hey, I knew a good deal when I saw one. That's why I withdrew the transfer application."

YOU ARE

THE WALL THE LETS ME FUNCTION AS PART OF THIS WORLD

AND YOU ARE

THE ONLY REASON I'VE HAD TO BE MYSELF IN SO LONG

"I've always wondered." He turned to look at her, twisting slightly on the couch. "Did you talk to any of my old partners?"

She flushed. "They took me out for a sympathetic drink the day before I started."

"All of them?"

"All of them."

"Oh." There was a wealth of emotion behind that one word.

"Oh, that reminds me." She shifted slightly, so that her back was against the arm of the couch. "They went on and on about how impatient you were. When I first met ou, you were odd but you were infinitely patient with me. Why?"

He smiled faintly at the memory. "You didn't have the 'I have the men in white coats on speed dial and I'm not afraid to use them' look in your eyes like they did. You doubted my mental stability; they thought I was flat out nuts."

"Well, they were idiots. It's like... escargot. Not everyone can understand the appeal."

"So, Alex, do you like snails?" He was dead serious.

She grinned. "Love them."

YOU ARE

THE OTHER HALF OF MY SOUL I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT

YOU ARE

THE CLOSEST TO PERFECT THAT I'M EVER

NEVER GOING TO BE

The conversation stopped there. Morning found her leaning against him, head on his shoulder, with his arm around her waist.
