Winry remembers the last time that Ed actually opened up to her before he and Al left on their journey. She remembered how he had sat in his room cross-legged, fists tight in his lap as he shook his head when she asked if he wanted his hair cut.

The joints of his leg throbbed, and she could see the stress of getting used to automail on his face. She blinked at him, and put the scissors down.

"Why Ed?" She had asked, knowing that he had always hated being called a girl at school from his long bangs, and made sure to keep the majority of his hair short at all times.

He turned his head and dug his overgrown nails into his palm, only loosening them when he drew blood. "Because, Winry. I don't want to cut it until I get Al's body back, and restore my limbs. That way when I do, it'll be like coming clean…" He stopped, and light blush spread over his face.

Winry blinked, and took his bloody hand in hers. Using them hem of her dress she wiped up the blood, caring more that he wouldn't stain his white shirt than her blue dress.

She gripped his hand tightly and looked at him, eyes determined as she decided, "Then I won't cut mine either. I'll grow it out real long, and then when you guys come back fine, I'll shave it all off!"

Winry held her arms out to her sides as if emphasizing that she meant all of it.

Ed smiled and couldn't help the grin that peeked out when he imagined Winry with a shaved head.

Through the years of their travels, Ed or Winry would once in a while comment on the others hair length, Ed's growing much slower than Winry's because he was a guy. Winry thought of it as their dirty little secret, their promise not to cut their hair. It seemed silly now, and when Ed would remember their conversation his face would turn red and he would chide himself for being so girly.

So when Winry returned to the house she shared with the Elric's with all of her hair cut off, it shouldn't have been a surprise. She had it cut as short as Riza once had it, except that she kept the two long lengths in the front of her face. She admitted that she looked awful, but ignored the fact.

She waved off Al's "What did you do?!" With a shrug, and smiled brightly "I kept my promise to Ed."

He looked stricken and eyed Ed suspiciously. The two newlyweds had decided that Ed shouldn't cut his hair; it held too many memories for him to give up, and anyways, it seemed to have stopped growing. Winry was afraid that if they cut it, it would never grow back.

Ed looked up from his book, and smiled warmly at her. He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her down beside him, ignoring how strange it felt not to have strands of hair being sprayed all over his arm.

"I think it looks great, Win."

Her hair would never have to see the glint of scissors again.

A/N Very very very very very rough. Like, non-edited first shot at, multi-talking un-beta'd talking to friends while typing rough. I'll re-do it sometime soon, but as of now you all get to see me at my worst. I really don't think you can tell the actual point in this little drabble…
