A/N: Basically the company found an elf child in the forest and are taking it to Rivendell on their way to escort Bilbo to the Shire. The elf's name is Danika and she is around 8-9 years old by human standards. This is what I get when I read angsty fic's before exams. Anyway, the song is called "Lullaby for a Stormy Night". Enjoy, and please, NO FLAMES. This is my first fic. On that note, on with the story!
Bilbo woke suddenly, and looked around, trying to find what had woken him.
"Same cave, same dwarves and my swords not glowing, so why did I wake up?" He thought aloud, whispering so as not to wake anyone.
Then he heard it, soft whimpers coming from not to far away.
It was Danika, huddled in the corner of the cave, tear tracks trailing down her face, her eyes open wide and fearful. The thunder crashed again, almost enough to drown out her small cries as the storm raged on outside.
"Danika," Bilbo called out hesitantly.
Her eyes suddenly shot up as she hurriedly scrambled over to him, and clutched him tightly in a vice like grip, muffled sobs emanating from from where her face was buried in his tunic.
Still hesitant, Bilbo stroked her hair and slowly, softly, he began to sing the lullaby that his mother had sung to him when he was a faunt and was still afraid of thunderstorms.
"Little child, be not afraid
The rain pounds harsh against the glass
Like an unwanted stranger
There is no danger
I am here tonight"
Danika looked up at him, her eyes wet.
"Little child
Be not afraid
Though thunder explodes
And lightning flash
Illuminates your tearstained face
I am here tonight"
"And someday you'll know
That nature is so
This same rain that draws you near me
Falls on rivers and land
And forests and sand
Makes the beautiful world that you see
In the morning"
She rubbed her eyes, as his voice started to drown out the storm.
"Little child
Be not afraid
The storm clouds mask your beloved moon
And its candlelight beams
Still keep pleasant dreams
I am here tonight"
"Little child
Be not afraid
The wind makes creatures of our trees
And the branches to hands
They're not real, understand
And I am here tonight"
Danika glanced around at the small shadows, still lingering around the dying embers of the meager fire that Gloin had managed to make.
"And someday you'll know
That nature is so
This same rain that draws you near me
Falls on rivers and land
And forest and sand
Makes the beautiful world that you see
In the morning"
"For you know, once even I
Was a little child
And I was afraid
But a gentle someone always came
To dry all my tears
Trade sweet sleep the fears
And to give a kiss goodnight"
"Well, now I am grown
And these years have shown
Rain's a part of how life goes
But it's dark and it's late
So I'll hold you and wait
'til your frightened eyes do close"
Bilbo smiled softly as Danika started to join in.
"And I hope that you'll know
That nature is so
This same rain that draws you near me
Falls on rivers and land
And forests and sand
Makes the beautiful world that you see
In the morning"
"Everything's fine in the morning
The rain will be gone in the morning
But you'll still be here in the morning..."
At long last, Danika's eyes closed as she fell into a restful sleep, curled up safe and warm in Bilbo's arms.
A/N: I just realized that my first fic was a songfic. Huh. Description of Danika in my profile. Probably.
