Curtain Call

Because no matter how many times you close your eyes, or how many wish sticks you consume or how loud you turn the volume on. The truth is there, like the lingering aftermath taste of your afternoon tea.

That Sakura is off-limits. That she already belonged to somebody else. That she's in love. That in a world boxed with conformities, loving Sakura is a sin.

And the world will persecute her.

Her childhood suddenly felt so long ago. A blur of memories best kept unheard, alternating between stolen glances and locked diaries. Things change and kids grow up. The last card silently tucked into its final place. The last class photo framed, smiles forever frozen. Even Sakura grew up.

"It's okay." The words weighted heavily on Sakura's shoulder. The open invitation to misery hovered above them. Sakura could but extend her hand and trouble will come crashing down towards them.

"I'm not afraid." She was lying of course. Tomoyo knew. They both wanted to smile.

"I'll stay." The decision sounded final and nonnegotiable. Sakura stepped briefly away from Tomoyo and swirled around the empty classroom. Breathing away the unwanted awkwardness.

"I'll stay Tomoyo-chan." Sakura tried again, her voice was scratchy. "I'll stay for you."

"You don't want to, Sakura-chan."

Sakura cried.
