Fireworks
Hannah sighed contentedly and plopped down beside Thierry on their checkered picnic blanket. She looked at him briefly, then turned away blushing, to find that he had been staring at her. Still red, she moved slightly closer to him and gasped in surprise as he pulled her to his side without hesitation. That may have seemed nice to anyone else, but for Hannah it meant Thierry was confident.
There was no problem with that, of course, it just amplified the drastic comparison between her and her soulmate. He was always so sure of himself and their relationship. On the other hand, Hannah had been having some insecurity issues. She was only slightly afraid to let Thierry in. He often questioned her on this, and she would simply reply with a shrug or a denial of some sort. After all, Hannah loved him; so desperately, in fact that she occasionally couldn't help her shortage of breath.
She loved him, not only for his incredibly delicious outer packaging, but for his strength, will, integrity, and unconditional love for anyone he came across. And that was the problem.
Thierry was too perfect. So amazing that she often couldn't keep up. She was only a human. Granted, a human with the ability to be reborn the moment of her death… forever. But other than that, what did she have? Right, she had Thierry, the unreachable God that she would never live up to, but made her so happy she wanted to cry
It was all a bit of a sick joke. Soulmates were made for each other, completely and utterly equal. So what in the world happened to her and Thierry? They were so unbalanced that she… she felt a bit like the lower end of a see-saw.
She tried not to linger on this for too long, for it made Thierry upset whenever she mentioned how much more wonderful he was than her. It was just about the one thing they ever, ever fought about, - when asked, Thierry said he had waited far too long to waste precious time with her on fighting – and that was ignoring the fact that she had never once heard him raise his voice.
So, she stared up at the pure midnight blue sky, so deep that it was nearly black. Thierry had so generously arranged for all of the Daybreakers to watch the 4th of July fireworks with each other. As the sky began to erupt with brilliant displays of sparks and colors, she looked at how close all of the soulmate couples were to each other; sitting in laps, arms held tightly around each other, chins resting on heads… Then she looked at Thierry and herself. Her arms were wrapped closely around her knees, while Thierry had an arm around her, lightly stroking her shoulder. He tried so hard to break her shell. That was when she knew that the problem was not existent because Thierry was too magnificent, no, it was that she had been pushing him away all this time. And she was horrified at herself. The first guy to love her with no exceptions and she was being an obstinate, self-opinionated freak.
Upon this realization, she took no time to hop into Thierry's lap and snuggle up close to him. He looked down at her, surprised. She had never been this frank about how she felt before. Not that he minded. He wrapped his arms around her and kept her comfortable in his warm embrace all night, while the sky erupted in rainbows and adorned beauty. What did it matter if anyone thought she was comparable or not? She only cared about Thierry.
