Chapter 1:

"Well Jacky boy where would you like to go?" he asked.

"Well Mr. Roosevelt I was planin' on head for the train station.."

"And why is that me boy? You have a perfect place right here. And from what I saw one of those girls really has a thing for you." The governor said gravely.

"Well I've always dreamed of goin' to Santa Fe. See the sights ya know." Jack said.

"If I were you I'd stay. Now that the strike is over you need to make sure Pulitzer doesn't go back on his word."

Jack started and considered what the governor had said. "You're right Mr. Roosevelt. Now would you mind takin' me back to me gang?"

"Not at all me boy, not at all." The carriage turned around and they were headin' back to the world……….

Jack tossed and turned as this went through his head. The strike had ended last week and he was having second thoughts about whether or not he should have headed for Santa Fe.

Jack woke up and looked around. It was quiet and everyone was still asleep. He got up and dressed and crept downstairs and outside. He thought back to a week ago and remembered how ecstatic he was when Sarah kissed him. He hadn't seen or heard from Spot since he left.

Things were good and things were bad but Jack thought something bigger was coming. He resolved to go see Spot as soon as possible.

He paced the street back and forth wondering what he should do. He kept thinking about what the governor had told him about Pulitzer and how he should stay to male sure he didn't go back on his word. Did the governor know something he didn't? Jack punched the wall and looked at the mess he made of his hand. He shook his head and started walking.

By the time he reached David's it was a few hours after sunrise. He tapped on the window and Sarah opened it.

"Mornin' Sunshine," she said brightly. Jack smiled. She had takin' to calling him Sunshine since two days after the strike had ended.

"Don't call me that," he whined. "Is David still home?"

"Yeah why?"

"I need to talk to him."

"Sure, hold on." Sarah went and got David.

"Hey Jack."

"Hey David. Let's take a walk." As Jack and David walked around aimlessly Jack filled David in on his dream andhow he was worried about Spot.

"Well if your so worried go look for him."

"What?"

"I said, 'If your so worried go look for him."

"And what about sellin' papes?"

"What about sellin' papes? We've been doin' good ebough to skip one day. This is serious, Spot would have at least sent someone by now to say that things there were normal again. Something is wrong. WE are goin' and we are goin' today."
