Perpendicular Lives
Season 8- about the time of "Zero Hour"
The day had been productive. She had studied and experimented with three or four pieces of new alien technology, a record for one day's work. However, her latest fascination was a helmet-looking device. It emitted a low level energy field, and she was eager to begin running diagnostics on it. Unfortunately for her, however, she had to go and pick up Cassandra from the airport.
It was Spring Break, and ever since Janet had died, Cassie spent school holidays with Sam. She picked up her keys with a sigh. The device would be there when she got back.
--
She looked at the helmet-looking device on her desk. It looked like a fascinating piece of technology, but she couldn't help it…she just didn't want to study it right now. She was tired and her back hurt.
Jack walked in. "You got a new toy?"
She smiled. "Yes, but I'm thinking about leaving this until tomorrow."
He feigned an overly shocked face. "Really? Hold on…the world's not ending, is it?"
She smiled, exhaustion evident in her features. "No."
He walked over and placed his hands on her shoulders, attempting to relieve whatever tension was there. "Junior being demanding?"
She nodded as she stood, rubbing her belly as she did so. She turned around and Jack bent down to eyelevel with her stomach. "Hey! Buddy! You take it easy on your mom." He said, placing his hands on her stomach. "We want her to think you're great so you can have lots of little brothers and sisters."
She chuckled. "Thanks, Jack."
He grabbed her jacket from the table. "Hey! I'll take you home."
"You don't have to do that…I mean, who'd run the base?"
"Sam…I think Reynolds can handle it."
The klaxons rang and she looked at him expectantly. "Yep, Reynolds can handle it." He said, gently leading her out the door and escorting her from the base.
--
It was nearly two o'clock in the morning before Sam and Cassie stopped talking long enough to get ready for bed. Sam brushed her teeth only to whirl around, believing she's heard a voice.
"Cassie?" She called.
"Yeah?"
"Did you call me?"
"No."
"Oh. Thanks."
"No problem. Good night."
"Good night."
As she laid in her bed, she tried to ignore the buzzing in her head. But despite the fact that the buzzing grew louder and louder, she fell asleep rather quickly.
--
"So…to bed." Jack said, helping her into the house.
"Jack, I said I was tired. Not sleepy."
"There's a difference?"
"Yes, Jack…a big difference."
"Ah…then I stand corrected."
She waddled into the kitchen. "Jack, where'd you put the Oreos and tuna fish?"
"In the cupboard where you wanted them."
"Oh! I found them."
He gave a tiny chuckle of amusement as she turned the corner. "What?"
"Nothing."
She walked into the den. "So, are you watching E.T. with me?"
"Aw, come on, Sam…you know how much I like sci-fi…"
"Hey! If you don't want to watch, I'll call Teal'c and cuddle with him."
"You wouldn't!" He said, following her.
She reached for the telephone. "Oh, I wouldn't?" She asked, playfully.
"You are a woman who knows no resistance." He said, sitting on the couch, ready to watch the film.
She smiled as she turned on the movie. "Admit it, tough guy…you like it."
"No, I don't." He grumbled.
She leaned into his body, cuddling close to him as she looked into his eyes. "Just a smidgeon?"
No, he thought to himself. Not even a smidgeon…
She started tracing lazy circles on his stomach as she watched the movie.
Nope. No smidgeon…no…smid…
"Maybe just a smidgeon."
