Hi guys! This is a fanfiction idea that I've had for a while, I just never got round to doing it (damn plot bunnies!) Now, if the story sounds similar to FatMouseLover's story, it's because I am the same person - I just forgot my password to my old account (oops!). So please don't attack me about it.
This story's a high school, non-demigod AU where Percy and Annabeth attend the same school. Now, as an Australian, I have very little understanding of American schooling so please tell me if I'm doing something wrong! :)
Disclaimer: I do not own Percy Jackson or any of the characters.
Mild swearing in this chapter, be warned.
Now, without further ado, I present:
CHAPTER 1 OF THE NEW KID!
"Beep! Beep! Beep!"
I groaned, my alarm's abrasive ringing too harsh for my morning ears. I arbitrarily flopped my arm around until it somehow hit the off button on the offending grey and black object.
With that god-awful sound out of the way, I grumbled, throwing my legs across my bed and stumbling out of my room, almost smacking into my doorframe as I walked past.
Shit, I was not a morning person.
Somehow, by some miracle, I made my way to the kitchen without tripping over the toys or stepping on the Lego scattered across the hallway, courtesy of my little step-brothers.
"Morning Annabeth! Are you excited for your first day as a senior?" My stepmom chirped, a little too brightly, looking up from the slices of toast she was buttering for Bobby and Matthew, my stepbrothers.
"Morning. And yeah, sorta." I grabbed my books for the day, my laptop and charging cable, and shoved them into my black backpack. I also grabbed my lunch out of the fridge that I'd made the night before, carefully placing it in front of the books.
After my bag was packed, I quickly made my signature banana and kiwi morning smoothie, with a dash of honey and protein powder. It was an odd combination of flavours, but it was good as hell and packed a nutrient-filled punch to my morning routine.
I quickly sipped the green smoothie and rinsed the cup out before walking back down to my room to pick out an outfit for the day.
Standing in front of my closet, I considered my choices.
After all, I was the Annabeth Chase. Top grades, top looks, top reputation. I had to have something to show my status but not being too wannabe.
After a few seconds of dilemma, I threw on an Annabeth Classic: a striped black and white, short-sleeved top with a high collar, and a pair of tight grey leggings and classic white Converse.
I pinned my long blonde hair in a loose, messy bun and dabbed on a bit of mascara and lipgloss, accentuating my high cheekbones with a dash of highlight.
Dashing back out, I quickly threw on my backpack and ducked into the garage to grab my bike.
I was just fastening my helmet when my dad came in, "Hey Annabeth, I hope you have a good first day." I ignored him, hopping on my bike and pedalling away, leaving him standing in the doorway.
God, I hated my 'family'. Their sickly sweet smiles, honey-coated words. And shit, I hated my dad most of all. He never seemed to acknowledge my existence until it was good for him.
I channelled my mixed emotions, pedalling harder and harder until I hit a bump on the path and I went down. Fuck.
My hands had taken the brunt of the fall, scraped and bloody, and I bruId the gravel out of the cuts. my leggings were surprisingly fine, but my knees stung all the same. Just at that moment, a guy crossed the road and came over to me.
"Hey, are you okay? That was quite a fall!" He stretched out his hand to help me up, his black hair flopping into his eyes. I took it, standing up gingerly. I stared at this guy, at his tall, tanned skin and his chiselled jawline, his black mop of hair and gorgeous sea-green eyes.
Their eyes met for a second too long and-
And I wondered what the fuck I was doing. I had a boyfriend! I couldn't just be ogling random guys on the street. I snatched my hand away like I'd been burned, "I don't need your help. Get the fuck away from me."
His face fell, before sliding into a careful mask of indifference. But I could see the hurt flash in his eyes.
"Oh, okay. Just...trying to do something nice."
"Well, be nice to someone else. I don't need it." I spat, with more venom.
Why was I being so cruel?
"Well, not so nice meeting you. I'm Percy. Percy Jackson. See you around." He crossed the road again, and continued walking.
Fuck.
Why'd I mess it up? He could have been a friend. God, I haven't had many friends... I was just TOO unreachable for most people to even bother.
I hopped back on my bike, pedalling harder, watching more for the potholes and bumps in the road, heading for school.
I quickly dismounted, locking my bike up at the rack with a state-of-the-art locking mechanism (designed by yours truly) and surveying the crowd, looking for Thalia.
My vision tunnelled, scanning, looking for a girl with all-black clothes, a spiked collar and a whole lot of eyeliner. No luck. Checking my watch, I saw it was 8:30, giving me fifteen minutes to find Thalia, get my locker number and my timetable and head to homeroom.
The sea of students would have been tough to get through if you were a normal kid, but me being me, they parted to let me through. I heard the whispers of the students (especially the new ones), following me as I stalked through.
"Oh my god, it's Annabeth Chase."
"DAMN! she's HOT!"
"IN. THE. FLESH. Oh my gosh!"
"I heard she has an IQ of 239!"
"Is she single?"
I simply sighed and ignored them, except to throw a wink at an unsuspecting dude or flash a peace sign at a girl.
I had slipped back into the role of bitchy queen bee far easier than I had thought I would, considering this morning's events.
But, my vague thoughts of regret disappeared as I saw Thalia. Tall, athletic, and equally as respected as me. We'd both clawed our way up the social ladder when we were freshmen, and no one had questioned us since.
Annabeth and Thalia. The unbeatable team. In looks, popularity and grades, none could compare.
I ran over to Thalia, enveloping her in a huge bear hug, "Hey girl! I missed you!"
"I missed you too. Now shut up, lets get our timetables," Thalia said, her usual rude demeanour returning. The only thing I didn't miss…
"Fine, let's hurry up before the tiny-ass freshmen get in line." We strutted off, chatting about Thalia's recent trip to Fiji, weaving our way through the crowds of students.
Lining up for timetables turned out to not be as much of a struggle as it was for the poor kids at the bottom of the social ladder. I shoved my way to the front, pushing past freshmen and sophomores and juniors and stated my name for the form to be printed.
Thalia did the same thing, and Annabeth waited for her, brightly coloured timetable in hand.
"Nice. God, it feels so good to be annoying to the freshmen. Show 'em who's boss." Thalia had assumed the role of bad bitch even in middle school, the harsh words slipping from her mouth as I reminisced other times.
"Yeah yeah, we all know you're super fuckin' mean. Cmon, let's go to homeroom."
I walked off as Thalia went a different way.
Woo! First chapter up! I probably will have a pretty wonky updating schedule because I've gotta fit writing around schoolwork and my extracurricular stuff, so sorry if it's irregular!
Please don't forget to review or PM me with ideas! I also take requests so don't hesitate to contact me! :)
Okay, that's it from me, see ya next time!
