This didn't fit very well in any of my other stories, so I decided to post it as a stand alone. I haven't done a real songfic in a while, and this one stood out.

Lonestar's What About Now, Avatar's Zuko and Katara and Sokka, as a side note.

They're arguing, actually. But they're going to do something.

Good golly gosh, stop the presses, AStormIsBrewing wrote a romance-ish thing in which something happens!!

My AU names for the characters never change, even if the world does.

The Midwest is Pretty Big

The sign in the window said for sale or trade
On the last remaining dinosaur Detriot made

"You didn't—"

"I did."

Katie couldn't believe what was sitting in her driveway. She wasn't car-crazy, not like her brother was, or anywhere near literate enough to know just what that was . . . but it was . . . it was. . . . The bottom fell out of her voice. "How much did it cost?"

"Seven-hundred."

Seven hundred dollars was a heck of a deal
For a four hundred horsepower jukebox on wheels

Zach had that smile, the one that meant he was assuming he did good, the one that . . . "You idiot! Does it even work?!"

That wiped the smirk of his face. "I drove it, didn't I? I mean, look at this thing, it's practically perfect!"

The 'rod was impressive, oh, she would give him that, with the deep purple paint job and the blue and red lines (she had no idea of the technical term) that laced around each other all around the car. "You don't just drive home a car without talking about it! I mean, I could see Scott doing something like that. Maybe even Acton, but you . . . you're supposed to be, I don't know, responsible?!"

"I am responsible! I used all my own money! Anyways, it's the best excuse you could ask for."

"Excuse?"

"You've been sighing about it for weeks; don't think I haven't noticed." Katie had a hard time believing Zach missed anything. His honey-colored eyes were too intense, especially now.

We always said someday somehow
We're gonna get away gonna blow this town

"You were the one who wanted to get out of here. This is the perfect excuse. What about now?"

How 'bout tonight
Baby for once let's don't think twice
Let's take that spin that never ends
That we've been talkin' about
What about now

Why should we wait

"This is the perfect time to go," he said, taking her hands. "You hate your job, I hate mine. Scott is off getting his Masters, Acton and Talia went to China. We need to get out of here instead of just planning year after year."

We can chase these dreams down the Interstate
And be long gone before the world moves on
And makes another round
What about now

"We have been putting it off," Katie conceded, looking down. Those eyes of his made thinking difficult. She only managed to catch Zach's smirk.

Just give me the word and we'll be kickin' up dust
We both know it's just a matter of time
Til our hearts start racin' for that county line

Several days later, Katie got a call from her brother. "You're where?!"

"We're not really sure," she replied. "Somewhere in Wyoming, I think. We're looking for Yellowstone. I think we might apply for jobs there."

"You think you're in Wyoming?"

"The midwest is pretty big, Scott."

"That's you're excuse? The midwest is pretty big? I can't wait to hear why you just decided to pack up and leave." He paused for a moment. "You two aren't in any trouble, are you?"

"Scott!"

"Hey, listen, I'm just looking out for my baby sister."

"Your baby sister is twenty-four years old and married. We're going to be fine, Scott. Better than we would be cooped up in that old town."

"Yeah, whatever. I'm sure your fights are going to put some grizzly bears to shame."

"I'm hanging up now, Scott."

"Hey, it was a j—"
