Chapter I
Enigma
"My name...?" Such a question was a mystery, something I could not answer. As the thought crossed my mind, no answer was revealed.
"Are you unaware of your own name?" The soft-sounding voice came from a girl, who looked to be around my age, if not a few years older. She was leaning against a wall to the far left of me. For some reason she looked familiar...
She had long auburn hair that reached her butt, with small curls near the end of the silky strands. Her eyes were gentle-looking, yet curious and the soft blue-green hue of her iris' reflected a little of what was going on in her head.
"She must've hit her head pretty hard." A tall man spoke as he stood before me, crossing his arms over his chest.
That was when I felt a sharp pain erupt in the side of my head; I reached up to place a hand over the aching area. Instead of my hair, my hand came in contact with a soft cloth material, which I assumed was bandages.
"W-What happened?" My voice sounded scratchy, suggesting that my throat was dry and I needed a drink. Just a moment after I spoke, a male to my right handed me a glass of water.
"Here," His kind smile seemed nearly perfect, and I forced myself to focus on the water rather than him.
"Thank you..." I trailed off, then cautiously took a much-needed drink. As the cool liquid slid down my aching throat, I felt the burning sensation ebbing away.
I heard a new voice from behind me, and despite my curiosity I didn't turn to see who it was.
"Avien, until further notice this girl is to be under your protection," The voice was deep and a bit husky, definitely belonging to a male. He continued, "Make sure to give her a name."
The girl I now knew as Avien nodded, then approached me with her short yet quick strides. Not wanting to be a bother, I stood up without a word and followed her as she guided me out of the room. Then she quietly spoke,
"You really don't remember your name?" I swore I heard a hint of sadness in her voice, which made me feel kind of guilty. Did she pity me?
"...I'll give you a name later. Right now, you need clean clothes and a haircut."
I hadn't even noticed what was wrong with my clothes and hair until she said that. My clothes, which were a simple tank top and jeans, were all torn up and bloody. My hair was bloody as well, but also a tangled mess with impossible knots.
After a quick shower and a simple haircut, Avien helped me dress in a clean set of clothes. The clothes were hers, so they were a bit baggy on me; a black t-shirt with "Ivalice Academy" printed on the front in bold blue letters, along with a pair of faded cargo pants. They were too long, so I rolled up the pant legs to just below my knees. I was much happier to be in clean comfortable clothes, though I wasn't too happy about my hair. Despite being knotted, it had reached down to my lower back, and now it was shoulder length and layered. I would admit, it looked really cute, but it was different.
"Now, for your name." She looked me in the eyes, it kind of felt like she was peering into my soul. The thought made me shudder as chills ran down my spine. "Your eyes... They're a deep bright blue." She seemed to get lost in her trail of thoughts, making me wonder what was going on inside that head of hers.
Just as Avien was about to speak, a mysterious male voice cut in from behind me.
"Skye?"
