Kait was sitting on Gabriel's lap in the big armchair in the common room type thing.
"Can you believe," she began, "that in the last three months we've saved the world at least twice?"
"I believe it, Angel."
"It's unfair."
"On the contrary, if none of it had happened," he waved his hands about, "I wouldn't have you." Their eyes met and he leaned in.
"Eh—hem."
"Lewis!" They shouted at the same time.
"It's not Lewis." They both froze at the voice. Jackal Mac is here! Kaitlynn screamed mentally to the other three—Gabriel already knew, obviously.
Gabriel tightened his arms around her. "What do you want, Jackal Mac?" Gabriel asked warily.
"Nothing you're not familiar with," his eyes flashed, "revenge." He kept his tone polite, uh, conversational, even.
"I don't know what you mean," he replied evenly, and Jackal Mac looked pointedly at Kaitlynn. This got a rise out of Gabriel, just like Jackal Mac knew it would. But as Gabriel got up to challenge him, another hand came over his shoulder, and one on Kait's.
"Well, well. Interesting secret, that."
"Frost, don't say a…" Kait began
"One good reason."
"Because this is not the time."
"No time like the present."
She blocked her thoughts so only Frost could hear. You can't just blurt out that you're dying!
"Why not? If you don't I will."
"Secret be damned, Frost. We're here on business."
"Right. Get in the car."
"Or what?" Kaitlynn challenged.
"Or I will tell. I'll tell your boyfriend, I'll tell your friends, I'll call your father. Or, you can get in the goddam car."
"I'm not going anywhere with you two, with or without my friends and Gabriel."
"Fine." She let go, "Everyone who loves good secrets!" She shouted. "Kaitlynn's going to die!"
"DON'T THREATEN HER!" Gabriel exploded.
"Threat?" she said, her voice calm. "That's not a threat."
"What do you call it?"
"I call it telling her secret." Frost remained entirely composed.
"Kaitlynn?" Gabriel turned his gaze to her.
"I…it's…Yes, I'm dying." She ran out of the room and up the stairs, Gabriel trailing behind her.
