Éponine died on a Thursday afternoon. She had been shot between the eyes; the shooter was never found. Enjolras found her on the floor of their apartment with a letter in her cold hand. To my boys was how it was addressed. Jehan went into grief baking mode. Courfeyrac just ate and watched. Bahorel and Grantaire got into bar fights more nights than not. Combeferre got kicked out of the library for yelling when someone tried to check out Éponine's favorite book. Feuilly made one thousand paper cranes as if it could heal the hole in her head. Joly became bedridden and didn't talk while Bossuet almost got hit by a car he didn't see coming because of the tears. Gavroche got suspended from school for getting in a fistfight with a boy who made fun of his sister. Enjolras picked him up from school and took him to Jehan's apartment. Enjolras slipped on the marble mask and handled everything. He planned the funeral, chose her headstone, wrote her eulogy, and got security to make sure her parents never showed. Some guy in a leather jacket showed up towards the end and put a white lily on her grave at the end though. He chose the red dress and the ring she wore as they put her in the ground next to a black granite headstone. Enjolras was the one Gavroche found, shivering in the falling snow while sitting by her graveside in the tux he was going to wear to their wedding. Gavroche took the man home, made him a hot chocolate with Fluff mixed in (just how she used to make it), and plopped next to the coach with Enjolras to watch Lilo and Stitch. Enjolras woke to a small body curled into his side. A few days later, Gavroche was a permanent fixture in Enjolras's apartment. Scruff came a few days later. He was a stray cat Gavroche brought home. Scruff was untrained and slightly rude, but Gavroche loved him so he stays. Until, Scruff scratched Mrs. Bisset across the face. It was four months since Death had said hello to Gavroche, and he was back to collect another soul. Enjolras drove Gavroche to the veterinarian's. Gavroche just pets Scruff calmly. The sit in the waiting room for a few minutes before a veterinary techinian calls them into an operating room. The vet tech explained the procedure before giving Scruff the first injection. He left the room, so they could say their goodbyes.

"There was never any good in goodbye," Enjolras said. Gavroche petted the scruffy little cat and said, "Say hi to my sister for me, please. You better say hello my sister, you damn cat. Tell her I miss her. Tell her we all miss her." The first tear falls. "Tell her Courf's and Jehan's wedding is coming up. She'd hate the flower arraignment. They're pink and purple, not red. Not like hers were going to be. Cosette is maid of honor. Her and Marius just got back from a small vacation. She's pregnant. Twin girls. They're thinking of Éponine for one of them. I told them not to, that you would have hated it. You thought anyone deserved to be named after you. I'm getting all A's in school, as you wanted. Combeferre's been helping me. I've started getting university offers. Enjolras won his first big case. You should have seen his face when he told us he'd won. I think the only time I've ever seen him smile larger was when he told all of us you'd said yes. No new girl for him yet." Gavroche wiped his eyes. "We're all doing okay. We're surviving. Just like you'd want. We miss you." Gavroche stopped for a moment tears streaming down his face. "So, you got that, you stupid cat? That's what you tell my sister when you see her. You tell her that, Scruff. It's from Gavroche and her boys. Don't you dare forget a word of it."

"Excuse me. It's time," the veterinarian said, picking up Scruff. Gavroche nodded as his cat was put down. Death took another soul from Gavroche.
