My name's Benita Wheeler, I'm seventeen years old and I'm pregnant with my twin brother's baby. Sounds fucked up, right? Well, it gets better.
You see, my brother Danny and I are also half-siblings; we have the same mom (I mean, we're twins, why wouldn't we?) but we have different dads. Mine's Mom's ex-husband Jerry and Danny's is, well... how do I say this? Neither of us know who Danny's father is, aside from the fact that he was deported back to Mexico not long after Mom slept with him. He could still be alive with a family of his own or he could've been shot down when he had to go home and killed. I'm just guessing, of course.
Anyway, I'm 35 weeks pregnant with my brother's kid and from the sonogram pics I have of her, she does not look anything like him. She looks more like Jerry, to be honest. We'll just have to see when she gets here. I hope she hasn't minded the constant stares we get at school all day with my bump jutting out from my clothes. I don't mind the stares that much, either, but the name-calling is what really gets to me. I've officially been labeled the "school slut," the "local Jezebel," the "harlot," the "family whore," and the "beautiful redneck." It hurts, really hurts, almost like-
Wait, what was that? I just felt a jolt of pain go through my back. That can't be good. I'm frozen with fear, my face fixated into the "deer in the headlights" look, as I try to comprehend what the hell is happening.
"Benny?" I hear another girl ask out loud. "Are you okay?"
It takes me a couple seconds to figure out it's Riley Perrin, one of the popular girls and one of the members of the Blondies.
"Uh, yeah," I lie. "I just forgot about something."
Riley walks over and grabs me from the side. "Really? It looked more like you were in pain. You want me to take you to the nurse's office?"
I shake my head no, but Riley insists on taking me there anyway. I don't even know why she would go out of her way to help me, a practical nobody. Maybe she's just trying to be nice because it's a nice thing to do... or maybe... she's doing this because she's been seeing Danny and she's trying to get on my good side. I don't know that much about her so it could be either one.
"Aah!" I shout out in pain. "Oh God! This hurts so much."
"Don't worry, Ben," Riley assures me. "We're almost there."
"Damn it, I think the baby's coming! We can't make it!"
"Oh my God, really? Why don't you just lay down and I'll deliver the baby right here? Sound good?"
I nod my head weakly. I can only watch as she unzips my jeans and removes them along with my shoes and panties. I can feel the baby get into position. I don't know how much longer it'll be until she gets here, but it won't be very long.
Little Emma Claire Wheeler came into the world at approximately 2:15 PM while I laid on the hallway floor of my school. Riley was there to guide through every step of the process. I still can't believe she went through all this effort to help me deliver my baby.
All of a sudden, Danny shows up and sees me and our baby girl.
"Oh my God, what happened?" Danny asks out of shock.
"Emma Claire Wheeler happened, Danny," I answer proudly while my voice is still hoarse. "You wanna say hi to our daughter?"
Danny has no idea what to do. Riley looks at him longingly and gestures at him to pick up Emma. He reluctantly sighs and I hand him the baby. He doesn't even know why, but all of a sudden, his heart seems to melt and he smiles the biggest smile I've seen since we graduated from kindergarten.
"Hi, Emma," he practically breathes to her. "I'm your dad... and your uncle, too, I guess. The world is a great place to be. I really hope you love it here."
She shows off her gums and he cries tears of joy. He's a father.
