Title: Late
Author: Kay-chan15 and tenshiforgotten
Fandom: Uta Kata
Pairing: Kai/Sei
Notes: This is set sometime during the series, before Sei finds out about everything going on with Ichika but after Kai has. I had wanted to check something in ep 12 to make extra sure it fit in but I don't have time so...hope it's all okay.

Late

Kai was sitting on his bed with his math book on his leg, using it as a table to write an English report due the next day. He was only working on it half-heartedly however, glancing at the clock every now and then. Sei was over thirty minutes late. Sei was never that late. Not without a good reason, at least.

He looked out the window, noticing that the skies were starting to get dark, and rain would probably even fall soon. Where was he? He hadn't said he was going anywhere that would take this long, had he? Kai tried to remember Sei telling him, maybe while he was still pretty much asleep, that he was going grocery shopping, or had to pick something up, or anything at all really that would explain this.

He couldn't recall a single thing.

Sei was forty minutes late now. That had to mean something had happened. It had to. Sei would never be that late on purpose. Kai put his paper down beside him before getting up and walking to the living room, starting to put on his coat and slip on his shoes. If Sei was in trouble... He had to do something.

Just then, the door opened and the very person he was so worried about stepped inside, almost walking right into Kai who was still standing very close to the doorway. Sei stopped and looked up at the slightly taller boy, expression confused. "Kai? Where are you going?"

"To find you." Kai stepped backwards, taking a good look at Sei. He looked perfectly alright, no scrapes on the skin, or rips in his clothes that he could tell... He felt something like relief go through him.

Looking down as he slipped his feet out of his shoes, Sei said, "I'm sorry I was so late. Ichika was having a bit more trouble than expected with something, and I wanted to make sure she understood it."

"Oh." Kai frowned and kicked his shoes back off as well. "You could have called though."

"I was in a hurry to just get home so I forgot to before leaving, and I left my cell phone home by accident today." Sei pointed over to where it was lying on top of the small table near the entranceway. "Sorry, Kai."

"You don't usually forget things though," Kai said as he walked back further inside before falling backwards onto the sofa.

After shrugging out of his coat and hanging it up, Sei followed and sat down beside him, pushing Kai's legs out of the way. "Maybe you're rubbing off on me," he suggested, though with a small smile.

Kai laughed, turning to look at Sei again. "Oh really? That'd normally be a good thing you know."

"So says you." Sei shifted then, to lean sideways against Kai. "I'm sorry for worrying you though."

Kai moved to put his arm around Sei's shoulder, pulling him in closer in a hug. "It's okay. Just don't do it again."

Sei turned his head to the side to give Kai a gentle kiss on the lips. "I won't. I've just been more distracted lately. Ichika's been acting strangely and I'm worried, Kai."

"... I'm sure she'll be fine, Sei." Kai smiled at him. "Yeah... Everything will be okay."

Nodding, Sei leaned on him again and closed his eyes, murmuring drowsily, "I'm sure it will work out, whatever it is."

Kai kissed Sei on the forehead, smiling as the boy nodded off into sleep. Yeah... Somehow, he knew, when Sei was with him, everything would be okay.
