Title: Power of Two
Fandom: X/1999 (anime)
Characters: Fuuma, Subaru
Pairings: Mentions of Subaru/Seishirou, Kamui-->Subaru, Fuuma-->Kamui, and possible Kamui-->Fuuma. And potential for future Subaru/Fuuma, I guess.
Notes: I...can't believe I actually made myself start to like this pairing by writing this. Post-anime only, of course, but still... Anyway, first time I'm writing both of them, so I hope it came out okay... Post-anime so there are obviously major SPOILERS.
"He loved you, you know," a voice says from behind him, and he shifts to glance briefly over his shoulder. Fuuma is there, but that doesn't surprise him. It is his house, after all, that they have decided to hold Kamui's funeral at, the shrine that Fuuma will be selling soon. It is too big for him to stay in all alone, and holds too many bittersweet memories within its walls.
"Which one?" Subaru asks morosely from his seat on the low wall at the front outskirts of the property, watching Fuuma as he walks closer and comes up to stand to the side of him right behind the wall.
"Both, in their own ways. I can still remember what I saw of their Wishes and hearts," he adds softly, maybe as explanation and maybe as just a comment. Subaru remains silent, watching him out of the corner of his eye, watching his lost expression, and suddenly he wonders what Fuuma will do now. He has lost everything, his family, his more than best friend, his life. In a way, he is similar to himself, Subaru reflects, and he wonders why he never noticed that before. He supposes he was too caught up in his own pain to consider someone else's.
"Seishirou loved you; I saw it every time I looked at him. I don't think even he understood it though, which was part of why his Wish was for you to kill him." Subaru doesn't reply to that, closing his eyes as flashes of the smiling older man play through his mind, quickly changing to flashes of red and heart break and tears. He sighs, and looks down at his dangling feet.
"And Kamui..." Fuuma continues, pausing as his voice catches and cracks. "Kamui loved you, too," he finally finishes. "I think it was because he saw how similar you two were, and knew you could understand him better than anyone." He smiles acrimoniously, laughing at his sadness. "I like to tell myself it's also because he considered me lost and wanted to make himself move on, but that's the one thing I'm not sure about."
Finally, Subaru looks at him fully, taking in all of the pain freely expressed in his face, his posture, his very essence. He wonders if there is anything he can do for this poor boy, but then is reminded that he can't even do anything to help himself. But maybe just as it helped with Kamui, being around someone who can understand your pain will help in itself, and maybe he can offer that if nothing else.
"I'll visit again, if you want."
Fuuma looks at him in surprise, obviously never expecting such an offer. He looks lost for words, but finally he nods. "I'd like that."
And Subaru nods back and jumps off the wall, sticking his hands into the pockets of the long white trench coat he still wears and walking away without a look back or word farewell. They don't need that; he will return. There will still be so much pain and tears for both of them in the future, even if they feel so empty that they couldn't possibly cry, but maybe together they can get through that at least a little, get to the point where the simple act of living doesn't hurt.
He will be looking forward to it.
