"come on!"

"what?"

she sat up groggily, dark circles under her eyes.

he grinned at her.

"you've got to come see this."

she reluctantly followed, stumbling along over the lumpy roots in the ground.

he began to climb up the tree and stared up at him.

"what are you doing?!"

he grinned even wider than before.

"just come along and you'll see."

she sighed in resignation and followed him up the tree.

and when she reached him she gasped.

it was beautiful.

they sat together on the branch, watching as the sky of the east horizon lightened from the midnight blue it was before to beautiful shades of gold and orange and red and purple.

"it's beautiful," she said.

he smiled. "i told you so."

she laughed and leaned on his shoulder, smiling as the golden misty light illuminated her face.

"you know how they say that 'nothing gold can stay?'"

"yeah."

"we'll be the rebels. we'll stay gold forever.

and then the golden sun came up over the horizon, and everything was silent as if they too were amazed by the beauty of it.

we'll stay gold forever.

it was a moment she'd never forget.

years later Thalia Grace found herself wandering the same woods that she had been in so long ago.

it seemed like centuries since she had sat on the branch with Luke Castellan, long gone by now.

perhaps it was centuries, and perhaps she had just lost track of the time that had passed by.

she climbed that old tree, and watched as the sun rose.

for a moment she could imagine that luke was still there, sitting right next to her, smiling and laughing and alive.

but no.

it could only be a dream now.

and it turned out that they were right after all.

nothing gold can stay.
