Same universe as Jim's baby
1.
The first time Joey heard his father's actual name was when he took his first steps. His mommy was grinning like a fool with a little bit of panic in his eyes, then he turned to the door to the living room and called 'Spock, come…' then he cut off as though remembering something. Joey watched tears fill his mother's eyes before his mother shook his head.
2.
Joey woke up late one morning to his mother's raised voice, a raised feminine unfamiliar voice, with a raised unfamiliar masculine voice. Joey descended the stairs at a careful run. He stopped at the living room doorway. 'Mommy?' His mother looked at him along with the strangers his mother was talking to. 'Jim, son, who is this?' The woman asked. 'My son, Joey, Winona.' 'So who'd you knock up?' The male asked. 'That's not any of your concern, Sam.' 'If you are unable to care for him…' 'I'm not giving my son up, Winona, I told you three years ago not to come back, I'm telling you again, get out, take your son with you, and don't come back.' 'He's …' 'Nothing to you, Winona, not your grandson as I am no longer your son' Jim snapped, showing the two to the door.

Joe was afraid that the Vulcan would take him away when he came to talk with his mother. 'Joey, sweet pea, this is S'lek, he's your uncle' never mind that his father was an only child and his mother was fully human, Joey was learning that not all family was so by blood. 'Hello, Uncle S'lek.' Joey smiled. 'Hello, George.' The Vulcan said.
4.
Uncle S'lek never called him Joey. Joey was afraid to ask because his mother never corrected his uncle. 'There's a reason for it, Joey' his mother told him. Joey saw Uncle S'lek looking at picture, a real old fashioned, paper picture of himself and a young human. 'Who's that?' Joey asked. Uncle S'lek had looked at the boy and forced a smile, 'this is… was my T'hy'la, my Joey.' Joey never had a problem with what Uncle S'lek called him again.
5.
Uncle S'lek died in his sleep. Joey asked Jim why. 'He loved his Joey a lot, baby, as much as I love your father.' Joey looked up at his mother. 'Are you going to leave me too?' 'No, because S'lek was holding on for me and you, to make sure we were okay. Me, if your father dies, I have you to hang on for.' Jim sat next to his son and wrapped his arm around his son. 'S'lek is with the person he loves most, love, he's happy with his Joey.'

When he first met his father Joey wasn't impressed, he was rather hateful, regardless of how illogical such an emotion was, this man had broken his mother's heart, had left them, even if he hadn't known about Jim being pregnant, his mother should not have been afraid to tell his father that he was going to be a father. Joey spent a week ignoring the man, much to his mother's amusement.
