A/N: Hello! This may turn into a multichaptered fic, but I think it's ok like this... I'd love to hear your opinion. This is a weird mix of the L: Change The World movie and novel, with of course an AU twist. Some events (especially major ones) may not stick to canon and I apologize if you don't like that :) DISCLAIMER: I don not own Death Note, or anything associated with its brand**** Thank you for reading!
Maki Nikaido ran as fast as she could, tears streaming down her rosy cheeks. The twelve year old panted as her mind raced with the imagery of her Father's brutal death. His own assistant, Dr. Kujo, had been the cause of his death. For the moment, Kujo was unaware the young girl knew of the death, as she had hidden.
Her father was an amazing scholar who only wanted to make the world better. He could have! She knew he could have! If only Doctor Kujo hadn't gotten in the way. Why had she brought her this much pain? Dr. Kujo had always told Maki she loved her. How could anyone lie about that?!
Maki cried harder, clutching the backpack she had with her to her chest. Her most prized possessions were inside, including the teddy bear her deceased mother had left her.
Rain began to pour, taunting her in a sense. A medium sized house came into her view. Maki murmured her praises and sprinted to the house. Pausing at the steps, she took deep breaths and wiped her eyes, trying to compose herself enough to speak. She would ask for some sort of guidance, even just a tissue.
She knocked on the door. One, two, three times. There was silence besides the rain crashing all around her.
As she turned her back to leave, the door was thrown open, revealing a rather strange man. He had messy black hair, and dark circles rimmed his eyes. He wore a simple long sleeved white shirt accompanied by a faded (almost grey) pair of jeans. His posture was horrendous to say the least. "Yes?" his silky deep voice asked, clearly wondering why a child was at his door at this time of night.
"M-my dad- He... I needed t-to run- please let m-me in!" she broke down. The man looked her up and down, biting his thumb. He moved aside, providing space for her to pass through.
Maki eagerly ran inside, staring at her feet. She watched her tears clap against her Mary-Janes. A tissue obstructed her vision as she looked up to meet the man's eyes. He offered her the tissue, waiting for her to take it.
She slowly grasped it and began cleaning her face. Looking around, she noticed a younger boy, maybe six, sitting on the floor in the corner. His face was almost expressionless as he twisted her fingers around each other.
The man was watching her, having barely moved from his crouched over spot. "T-Thank you!" she exclaimed. The man nodded. He took a grasp on her forearm and pulled her towards the couch. "Please explain what happened."
Maki nodded. "My dad w-was murdered in his office. Dr. K-Kujo did it.. She was his assistant. I h-had to go before she caught me!" The man nodded. It had become apparent that the little boy was listening as he was now sitting cross legged in front of the couch.
"What's your name?" the man asked. "M-Maki Nikaido." He nodded. "Well Maki, my name is L."
