NOTE:
I had to have this at the beginning so it wouldn't take away from the ending.
It's early 11pm as I type this. New Years Eve. I wanted to do a short series of this type of thing but that's not happening now. I had a bit written for the other ones, but it's a bit late for that now. Happy New Year, I hope 2013 will be awesome for all of us. Love y'all! Thanks for reading! 3 3 3
I'm Jack Frost. The Winter Spirit; Guardian of Fun. I'm finally being believed in; I'm finally seen. Kids are happy when I come around, and they know why now.
But there's one person who is always happier than the others. She believes in me like no other, and I visit her whenever I can. If I didn't, she'd be alone. Her mother works full time, her father left them to start a band. Too bad the opening tour was snowed out.
It was just the one time, I swear. But it felt good.
Her name is Danielle. Completely human; works at a clothing store. She has friends; they don't believe in me. Mostly they think she's been reading too much and gets too attached to the characters.
Her birthday is New Years Day. She'll turn 18 and won't be able to see me anymore.
I've asked North if it's possible anyone can after that point, but he said it was likely impossible. I'm holding on to the hope that she's different. That she's special more than just to me.
But tonight's the night. She's by my side and there's 5 minutes before the countdown.
"Jack... You know you're the best thing that's ever happened to me, right?"
I can't help but let my smile grow. She's told me this many times before and I never get tired of it, "I know. Having you, I wouldn't mind being invisible to everyone else."
"You'd get lonely again. Come on, admit it. You love the attention. You would never give it up." She shifted, her head resting on my chest. We were on the roof of her house, over looking the city as everyone was partying the night away.
"I would. For you to stay with me forever."
"I'm not going anywhere," her response was automatic. We'd barely talked about what was going to happen and I didn't want to get into it on what could be our last night. She wouldn't go anywhere, that was true. But I would. If she can't see or hear me, it would be harder to stick around.
"I know, I know." Kissing the top of her head, my thoughts drifted to the future. My hopes for her. A family. She deserves a family. One that will be with her forever, and love her like she needs to be loved. Then I can meet her kids when she tells them about me.
I wouldn't even mind seeing her getting old- I mean, older. I've watched people get old. It's all I've done. It's all they do. As long as she's happy, I can handle it.
"Jack, the countdown" it was starting soon. Everything would be over in just a few seconds. I watched her as she twisted out of my arms, facing me. "Don't look away, okay? Maybe if we keep looking at each other I won't lose sight of you!"
I took her hands in mine and promised not to look away. I promised not to let go or give up. I would try anything.
10 - Her eyes widened
9 - "Don't look away"
8 - "I won't"
7 - My smile falters
6 - I hope she didn't notice
5 - I don't want her to go
4 - I can't lose her
3 - She's started crying
2 - So have I
1 - And we finally find out
"HAPPY NEW YEAR"
She blinks, and I know I'm gone.
