They gazed at the stars. He was cradling her as she nestled against his side, her head resting on his chest.
"Will you run away with me?"
She stiffened upon hearing his question. She rolled over on her stomach, leaning on her elbows. She gazed at his beautiful face with her sad, emerald-tinted eyes.
"You know it'll never work." She sighed quietly, but her face held a wistful expression as she said it.
"We could make it work. You and I, we could run away and live in the woods, and make our own home in the middle of the forest and we could have blond-haired, green-eyed little babies!" He ranted, his sky-blue eyes shining hopefully.
She was his everything. Even if she was a loyal and devoted Konoha kunoichi and he was an S-class nin affiliated with the Akatsuki, it never stopped him from admiring and falling for her. He adored the way her nose scrunched up while she was concentrating on healing her patient. He never failed in being enthralled by her whenever he watched her train; the way she split trees in half and cracked the ground beneath her in an earth-shattering earthquake was reminiscent of the way his art manifested itself. He was captivated at how she could be delicate, gentle and caring yet brave, fearsome and powerful at the same time.
He loved her so much. He craved being with her every second of his unforgiving, miserable life that he was willing to do anything, anything at all Kami-sama, just let her say yes.
She paused for a while, drawing her breath in carefully.
"I'd love to make lots of blond-haired, green-eyed little babies with you," she hesitated to continue as her bright green eyes filled with tears, "but I can't... I can't just run away..." Her voice trailed off as tears fell down her porcelain cheeks.
He pulled her against him, letting her bury his face against his neck while he stroked her back. His heart clenched painfully as her tears soaked his shirt.
"Shh, it's alright," he comforted her, leaning down to kiss the top of her head. The scent of pine and a faint whiff of cherry blossom lingered around them as he held her closer against his warm chest. He let her stay that way for a while, him stroking her back and her crying against the side of his neck.
After a few minutes he heard her sobs diminishing, and her breathing was slowing. He didn't make a sound until he heard her speak, "It's not fair at all."
He smiled bitterly at the stars. Sighing softly, he took her by the chin and planted a sweet, loving kiss upon her soft lips.
"It never is. That's how life works, love."
