Hey, all. I couldn't sleep tonight, so I wrote a little somethin'-somethin' for you. It's just fluff. Like, no, seriously. Fluffcakes. Setting: Hiei's just completed a badass final move during a battle - team versus giant demon - and everyone's tired. It's nighttime.
Read and review, please. It makes me feel all self-esteem-y inside.
Disclaimer: I don't own YYH.
"My, Hiei, this is uncommon for you."
"Hm." The dark-haired demon curled closer to Kurama's side, showing no interest in verbal combat. In response to the insistent scoot, Kurama gave a soft snort of a laugh and laid his head back on the ground. The air around them was delightfully cool; a relief, since Hiei's last attack on their enemy had consisted of a near-wall of flames. Had Kurama been thirty-percent more conscious, he might have griped over his singed hair.
"Koenma's gone n' forgot about us, didn' he?" came Kuwabara's groan from somewhere to Kurama's right. The redheaded demon couldn't quite pinpoint the exact location, because Yusuke was tucked firmly against his ribs in the effort to conserve heat – therefore, Kurama's vision was blocked on his right side. Perhaps Yusuke needed to cuddle something as he slept; Kurama couldn't tell the difference.
"If he has, there is no use in staying awake," Kurama mumbled, his own usually-steady voice slurred tiredly. "When he remembers in the morning–"
"You mean if."
"Optimism is a virtue, O Tired Yusuke," Kurama chided the sleepy detective.
"I thought it was Patience tha's a virtue."
"And optimism. As I was saying, when Koenma remembers to open the portal correctly, it will be morning, and we will be rested. We can't be rested, however, if you continue to talk," Kurama said to Yusuke, but directed a half-assed glare over at Kuwabara as well. Hiei stirred from his light sleep.
"Shut up. Everyone. Don't think I won't set this forest on fire again."
Groans from Yusuke and Kuwabara had Kurama smiling with his eyes closed.
It was silent for a while, and Kuwabara's soft snores began to lull the rest of the group into unconsciousness. Kurama was half-asleep when Yusuke stiffened beside him.
"I'm going to pretend you aren't awake, Yusuke," Kurama murmured. The boy under his arm huffed.
"Kinda hard to sleep when images of burning monsters are messing with me."
"Oh?" Kurama rolled to the right, rising up on his elbows over Yusuke, which – Kurama noticed with some amusement – didn't even make the detective bat a single eyelash. Yusuke was exhausted.
"Your eyes're really green," the detective said quietly, staring up at Kurama like a dumbfounded infant would stare at a turning mobile. "Like… really green."
"What else is green?" Kurama asked, fingers of one hand playing idly with his friend's dark hair.
"Grass… n' shit. Like… leaves, n' your eyes, n' slime, n' frogs… n'…" Yusuke squinted. "Stop trying to put me to sleep."
"It's working, isn't it?" Kurama said, smiling.
"You're heavy."
"That's beside the point. Go to sleep," the redhead urged, and fell gracefully onto his back again. Yusuke resumed his position from before, head resting on Kurama's ribs. "… If you must, then."
"Thanks. S'too cold. Dammit, Kuwabara!" Yusuke hissed when his orange-haired friend elbowed him in the back. "I'm going to hit him."
"You'll wake him, and then Hiei will kill you both."
"You mean threaten to kill us, right?"
"I've known Hiei and his sleeping habits for a while. You should let Kuwabara be," Kurama said past an airy laugh. His breathing was beginning to slow. Yusuke closed his eyes.
"Hey, K'rama?"
"Mm?"
"G'night. And stuff."
"And stuff, Yusuke."
