Phenomenon

"Now, by two-headed Janus,

Nature hath framed strange fellows in her time."

--William Shakespeare

The family crowed around its newest member and his birth mother, who caressed the baby against her breasts with a loving croon. There were visitors as well as the baby's family. Shinigami-sama, for once, was out of the mirror to take a look at this "future prodigy." Much was expected from this little baby and just in its first hour of birth. And Little Joan, a family friend, was over too. Her little toddler eyes were wide and her mouth gaped in a silent "O."

In the cradle of the mother's arms was a bundle of blankets and a face. He had a face of an angel, with his pale skin, smooth and unblemished and the slight rose red of his cheeks. Already little tufts of feathery golden hair framed the baby's face in half-curls. He was truly a gift from the gods. (No offense meant to Shinigami-sama). But what caught Joan's eye the most was when the baby woke.

He, would yawn in an almost cat-like manner with his little pink tongue curled up inside his mouth. Then his eyes would flutter open from sleep… Revealed were two orbs of clear-cut emerald. They were a brilliant green. Deep, clear, and tranquil. But there was some disturbance behind the serene expression of the babe. A turmoil deep within his eyes.

Joan blinked and for an instant she saw a strange sight. There were two spheres of… of… something in the baby with two contrasting expression carved into each. One had an expression of pure innocence, and naivety. Something a baby was expected to be like. It was the other that made Joan uneasy, even though she did not know why. It's blackened face was shadowed and unclear but Joan did deduce on thing. It was hungry. Starving even. For what, Joan never did know* for she blinked and the moment passed.

"What should we name him?" the mother asked, half to the audience and half to the baby. His wide, wakeful eyes watching the shape of her lips.

The most unexpected guest answered then.

"Janus," he said.

Joan turned to look at him in surprise, as did the rest of the family. Even the baby shifted in his blankets.

Again he repeated, "Janus."

"But why, Shinigami-sama? Why Janus?" one of the other kids, a few years older than Joan piped up. His curious tone stirred the rest of the family.

"It's a fitting name for him." the masked Reaper said before leaving the family for their celebrations. Joan watched him exit the room. There was no clicking of shoes on floor as most adults' shoes did. There wasn't even a thump of weight hitting the ground. He seemed to glide across the room, in Joan's eyes, as his black cloak disappeared behind the door. Thud.

A sound of such finality.

* Definetly not for the baby fodder. That stuff was gross.

A/N: I'm not sure where I'm going with this. Seriously, I think this is just a test to see how works. Janus and Joan are my little babes, they are guaranteed to come out in later Soul Eater fanfics. Eh, and I'm not sure if weapons are 'born' or not. If they don't, then screw.

Disclaimer: I do not own Soul Eater. Darn.
