The hall was quiet when the priest began to speak. "We are gathered here today to witness the joining of Sirius Black and..."
Sirius tuned out the priest as he scanned the gathered crowd. A flicker of sadness crossed his handsome face.
He didn't come.
That realization burned into his mind.
Why would he? A treacherous voice inside him asked. You see the way he looks at you.
What the hell am I doing here?
Sirius tuned back in the the priest in time to hear him say, "If anyone has any objections, speak now or forever hold your peace."
Sirius was about to turn and walk out of the hall—leaving the girl, whose family had insisted on the bonding, standing at the altar—when the doors to the hall were thrown open.
"Remus," Sirius breathed, "you came." He knew that the lycanthrope would hear him.
"Do you have an objection, sir?" the priest enquired. Hired by the girls family, he was plainly irritated by the interruption.
"Yes. I do." Remus' words fell like ice from his lips, his usually warm voice gone cold. He turned to Sirius. "Sirius," his voice cracked. "I should have told you as soon as I knew you were seeing her." Hundreds of emotions flickered across his face, and in the space of a heartbeat Sirius saw pain, anger, jealousy, fear, and a love so strong he couldn't believe he hadn't seen it before.
"I love you, Sirius, and I want you to chose me instead of her." Remus reached out to touch Sirius' face, but pulled his hand back, uncertainty in his eyes.
Sirius made his decision in less than a second. The words he'd been past hope of hearing had just fallen from the lips of the boy he'd loved—unrequitedly—for so long. Sirius turned to the girl standing next to him who was tapping her foot impatiently. "Goodbye," he said simply. Her cry of outrage was lost on Sirius, who in the next moment turned to the love of his life, grabbed his shoulders, and pulled him into a mind blowing kiss.
"I'd given up hope of ever hearing you say that," Sirius whispered, and kissed Remus again.
Seconds later, the two boys left the hall hand in hand, leaving a crowd of outraged people behind them.
