"I'll see you back in the states. I promise. But just in case, I left you a note."
You haven't talked to anyone from the war since you got home. You haven't written, called, or telegraphed them. You figure its okay; they haven't written you either. So you live your life with your wife and little girl. It is simple.
Breakfast with the girls, before you're off to work. You're job at a good clinic is easy; it's what you dreamed about in Korea. Tonsillectomy. Appendectomy. You treat kids with simple colds. There's no blood, unless you draw it for testing. You can take your time with them, unless they have pressing matters to attend to. It's just perfect…
Right up until your wife comes into your office late one night.
"Daniel just called."
"Daniel?"
"Peirce. Daniel Peirce... Hawkeye's dad."
"Oh! Hey, how are they?"
"They aren't that good." She clears her throat, "Hawkeye's not that good."
You never thought the sound of a glass of water hitting carpet would be so unforgettable. You call the airport; they can't get you there with all the snow that's in Maine. The train stations are snowed out. Car it is. Peg helps you pack everything in the trunk in record time. She gives you a kiss on the cheek and she tells you,
"Don't stop for red lights."
It reminds you so much of Hawkeye that you almost can't help but reel away from her. You cautiously give her kiss. Then you drive, and you drive fast; really, really fast. You reach Missouri by the end of the first day, but you don't stop. Maryland by the second day; you haven't slept and you're not tired. You just keep driving.
"He's at St. Brigid's General Hospital in Southwest Harbor. It's about forty miles away from Crabapple Cove. Room 116. Don't get lost. Daniel's not sure Hawkeye can make it through you getting lost."
Peg's words come unbidden into your mind as you're traveling down Fifteenth Street. Fifteenth Street was where Hawkeye's hospital was located; at least that's what you think the lady said. It's a miracle to you that Hawkeye never once let on that he had an accent when you can't understand a lick of what the locals are saying.
As it turns out, Fifteenth Street isn't the one you're looking for. Fiftieth Street. That was the one.
You run into the hospital, dodging nurses, doctors, and meandering patients until finally!
Room 116.
And wouldn't it just figure…
You drove 3500 miles cruising at the speed of light and you missed Hawkeye by one wrong turn.
"Goodbye."
