One at a time
Dear diary,
A friend of mine who goes by the name of rogue was recently on holiday in Mexico she told me that one day she was walking down a beach at sunset. As she walked along, she began to see one of the local boys in the distance. As she come nearer, she noticed that he kept leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things into the ocean.
As my friend approached even closer, she noticed that the young lad was picking up starfish that was washed up on the beach and, one at a time, he was throwing them into the water.
She told me she was puzzled and approached the lad and asked "evening, ah hope ya don mind me askin ah was wondering what yall are doing."
Whilst picking up another one he replied "I'm throwing these starfish back into the sea. You see, its low tide right now all these starfish were washed up onto the shore. If I don't throw these back into the sea they'll die up here from lack of oxygen."
"ah understand" she replied, "but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. Ya cant possibly get ta all of dem. There are simply ta many. don't ya realize this is probably happenin on hundreds of beaches up an down dis coast. cant you see dat ya cant possibly make a difference?"
Smiling sweetly he bent bent down picked up another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, "made a difference to dat one!" returning the smile my friend bent down and started throwing starfish back into the sea as well.
love kitty pryde
THE END.
