little miss sunshine

He only smiled at winter. The plants were dying, the sky was ashen, the snow was muddy black like tar and he would smile and smile. She liked smiling as well – it was her special talent – but right about now, she could only frown.
"Why are you happy?" she would say, voice suspicious – he wasn't normally so cheerful. Infact, he was usually colder than the sharp air and biting wind. As such, she expected a sarcastic comment, perhaps a roll of his eyes and a "whatever, weirdo." But he didn't.
"The nights are longer in winter, but the sun always comes out in the morning. It gives me something to hope for."
Yuffie frowned, brushing her hair behind one ear. And then, just before she surrendered to confusion completely, a grin broke out across her pretty face – a grin that heralded great pain and misery. "Hey, Riku…"
"What?"
And then she flung a snowball in his face with expert, super-speedy ninja stealth. Giggling like the Cheshire Cat, she danced backwards and scaled a nearby tree – within seconds, she was perched on the branches, watching as Riku grunted and growled, wiping snow from his face.
"Bet'cha don't like winter so much anymore."
Who cared about all that philosophical crap when there were snowballs to be thrown?
