Mistakes
My first 30 Rock fanfic - please be kind! I don't own 30 Rock; it is owned by the wonderfully creative Tina Fey.
It had been a mistake, she knew, getting involved with her professor. A mistake that became abundantly clear when she realised she was pregnant. Her professor refused to take any responsibility, and she ran home – she was scared. She didn't know what to do – she was reduced to a sobbing heap as soon as she reached her parents' house.
Gloria didn't want to give the baby up, but she knew she couldn't raise the baby by herself. So her mother and father agreed to claim the baby as their own – she would be her child's sister. She gave birth six months after returning home, to a boy she named Drew. After her baby was born, she left for Europe to finish her studies – she couldn't bear to see her son every day and pretend that she was his sister, not his mother. She did love her son, loved him with all her heart, and that's why she couldn't bear to pretend that she was his sister. So she saw him only once a year, at Christmas time – at least until her mother (and the woman he thought was his mother) fell ill. She moved back to New York from France to take care of her mother.
And now her mother was on her deathbed. She called her son, and he arrived in record time.
"Oh, Drew, finally," she said, throwing her arms around his neck. She composed herself a few moments later and pulled back. "Who's this?" she asked, looking at the dark-haired, geeky woman standing next to him.
"This is Liz – this is our first date," Drew replied.
"On Valentine's Day?" she asked incredulously. He never did have any sense of the romantic – how like his father he was!
"Funny story," the woman said, "he saw me on the toilet..."
"Liz," Drew interrupted her.
"Dr. Baird, your mother's asked to speak to you," the nurse said, interrupting her, "privately." Gloria gave Liz one final look of disdain before filing out the door with the rest of their family. She sat in the waiting room, nibbling at her thumbnail, knowing that her mother was going to tell Drew that he was not her son – that he was Gloria's child. She was nervous, but knew that it had to come out sometime – and now she was ready to accept Drew into her life as her son. She was ready to be a mother to him. (Something that he certainly needed. Honestly, her son taking a woman out on their first date on VALENTINE'S DAY?)
She hoped that he would accept her as his mother and understand her reasons for having her parents raise him as theirs. She truly hoped that he would.
