Unexpected
"I'm surprised you decided to come back."
Newt blinked up at the man standing over him. He'd been checking his suitcase - the very last thing he needed was another escaped creature while he was in New York. He feared Tina would murder him.
The words, though. The words were as familiar as the eyes of the speaker were not. Last time he saw them, they were colder and harder, a symptom of it being Grindelwald in disguise, Newt assumed.
"Oh. You're the real you this time then?" Newt asked, straightening up.
He saw recognition dawn on Grave's face and in sync, they each pulled the sleeves of their left arms up to reveal the words written there.
"Huh," Newt murmured, nervously. He dropped his sleeve and looked down at the floor. "That's… unexpected."
"Quite," Graves agreed. After a moment, he added, in a gentler tone, "but perhaps not unwanted."
Newt looked up at him from under long eyelashes, his hair falling in his face. "Yeah?"
Graves reached out a hand and brushed the hair out of his face, before he lowered his fingers to tilt Newt's head up.
"Yeah."
…
"So what creatures do you have?" Percival asked, leaning on the table.
The two are out for a private dinner, seated in the back of a restaurant where they could be guaranteed some privacy. He watched as Newt's eyes lit up, and as he listened to the younger man describe his beautiful creatures as though they are his friends, Percival could not deny that he was beautiful.
Newt prattled on - clearly a subject he enjoyed very much - and Percival had the pleasure of watching him become truly animated, enthusiastic in his descriptions.
His eyes shone with joy.
"You're beautiful," Percival told him, interrupting him mid monologue.
Newt blushed bright red and ducked his head awkwardly.
"Tell me more about your Thunderbird," Percival prompted, before the silence could go on too long.
Newt looked up at him suddenly, tilting his head as he appeared to weigh something up. Whatever he was looking for, Percival thought he'd found it, because he lit up suddenly and placed both elbows on the table, leaning forward.
"I can do better than that," he murmured. "Would you like to meet her?"
…
Percival thought that Newt kissed as passionately as he talked about his creatures. Hands were in hair, and skin was being stroked, and he didn't think he'd ever felt this way in his life.
No matter that he'd never have dreamed someone so lax about rules would be his soulmate, he thought, for the first time, that perhaps the fates might actually know what they were doing.
