So I'm channeling wee!Dean because I went back and watched some earlier episodes of the season. I figured I'd go ahead and post this, since it's been running around in my head. I had to get it out before I could work on my other stuff :) I hope you enjoy!
Lavender. His mommy smelled like lavender. Dean still remembered that, even though his mommy wasn't around now. He knew the smell came from the little bottle she used to keep on the dresser, the one she sprayed herself with every morning after she got dressed. She'd smile at Dean and scoop him up, and Dean would lay his head on her chest and inhale deeply, the scent never failing to comfort him. He missed that.
He held the scarf closer and buried his face in it. The lavender was still there, but it was fading softly. He could barely smell it anymore, had to breathe in harder and longer to catch the scent now, had to hold it closer to his nose; and even then it was really hard to get the faintest whiff of it. Dean had found the scarf in the backseat of the car, where his mommy had no doubt tossed it carelessly after getting too warm from the heater. He felt lucky to have it; everything else she'd owned had burned up in the fire and was gone; even that little bottle that made her smell so good.
Daddy let him keep it, let him carry it, even though it was pink and had little flowers dotting the surface. Sometimes, when he thought Dean wasn't looking, his daddy would press his face against the fabric as well. When Dean got it back it was always damp. Before his mommy was gone he'd never seen his daddy cry, but now he cried all the time; Dean thought maybe his daddy cried even more than Dean or Sammy did.
He wanted to tell his daddy that everything would be okay but he couldn't bring himself to speak anymore. He didn't really have a lot to say anyway, now that Mommy was gone. He only really wanted one thing and he knew he couldn't have her back, so there was no need to talk about it.
His mommy used to tell him that angels were watching over him; after the accident Daddy said that she was with the angels now, and that Dean wouldn't be able to see her for a long time. Dean tried to understand, but it was hard, so he just kept quiet and thought about it, trying to figure out where angels lived and why they couldn't just drive there. He wondered if his mommy had a new bottle of the lavender smell and if she still used it. He wondered if she missed him as much as he missed her.
