She saw him again today, in all his demonic glory coated with gentleness, fine hair blowing behind him, eyes so gentle, and yet they held a certain cruelty and wisdom no human would be able to comprehend.
No human like her, at least.
She had figured it out a while ago; this little secret of his that no one else knew of, for obvious reasons of course, he had his secrets, and she had hers.
Her friend's stepbrother is a demon, her friend from school, her friend who saves her from all sorts of academic trouble, her friend who hasn't the slightest clue of what his own brother is. She also didn't believe he was aware of her knowledge on the matter.
She won't tell, because even she knows what it's like to have a secret that should not be told.
It's been a year, she sees her friend less and less, but then, that is partially her fault.
Whilst her friend's brother disappears for periods at a time, she's gallivanting 500 years prior to her birth. Fighting demons who's very own hearts have minds of their own against their body, where everything she was raised to believe was myth came crumpling down into a heaping mess.
It's been a year since she's seen him.
Strangely, she's slightly bothered about it.
It might seem that he does not keep tabs on his human family, that he is too busy for such a familiar affairs. However, he keeps very close tabs for safety and because that constant part of his heart that had grown to love them.
It was hard for him not to notice the girl with unusual amounts of spirit energy, sitting at his kitchen table with his younger step-brother Shuichi. It only took one eye to eye look for him to understand that she knew about him.
For weeks as she and his brother got together, a sweet friendship he was sure of, he would find her eyes travel with him, whether out of fear or wariness, he couldn't be sure.
All he knew was that there was digging to be done.
It's been a year, and he has done his best to stay out of sights of this strange girl. Though he had been around, the slight interest he had in her made sure of that.
He found a loads to ponder on, the shrine that she lived on, the lie that she led at school, the half-breed decked in that garish red outfit that showed up in her home. Most importantly, he witnessed her disappearance upon entering the decrepit well house.
What a puzzle she made, it was high time he brought her to confrontation.
Once more, she hoisted herself over the ledge of the sheltered well, and climbed out, only to find him sitting there with a knowing expression.
"My brother should be more aware of who he makes friends with"
"Your brother should be more aware of who he is family with", she said grinning slightly at his unsurprised expression.
"You knew all along", she accused gently, trying to squirm my way out of explaining anything. He closed his eyes from the penetrating stare she had.
"So did you".
She laughed at this, unbelieving that there was this entire life right there in the future, not so different from the one she lead in the past, and it was always right under her nose. She felt hands on her shoulders, her laughing cut off a she looked up at him.
"We'd make an odd pair, wouldn't we?" She asked wryly, with a slight smile as he chuckled in agreement.
"I'll keep your secret if you keep mine?" she bargained.
"Deal"
A/N: I remember writing this a couple of years ago, but since becoming more active on again; I decided to revise through it, ya'know…so it isn't so painful to read through anymore haha I think it's much better now
